Tactical Rifle Cases are a great way to organize your semi-auto rifles. Rifle cases can hold anywhere form 2-4 rifle magazines. They also can have pockets for holding sight in tools or other shooting accessories. Soft gun cases are probable the best cost effective way of protecting and organizing your M4 Carbine or AK variant. You may even be able to store some of your ammo. For higher end rifle with expensive optics, try selecting a hard case incase your gun is at risk of being tossed around.

Something to think about when buying a rifle case

One thing people tend to forget about when they are packing up all of their guns and gear for a shooting match is how heavy everything gets when you load up all of the pockets.   I’d say that about 90% of assault rifle cases I own have stowed and empty rifle magazines and people forget there is a difference between 5 empty Pmags in a gun case and a rifle case with 150 rds of 5.56 ammo.   Especially if you have using 75gr ammunition.   I learned the lesson about ammo weight when I went to a gun show and tried to leave with a thousand rounds of 7.62×39 ammunition and 1000rds of .223.   It was impossible for me to carry it and I learned to appreciate the 5.56 ammunition.

When it comes to choosing a rifle case for a battle rifle, I think it’s really a good idea to consider a drag bag.   That gun is heavy enough and even the designer of the FAL knew that it would be more comfortable to carry that gun with a carry handle than over your shoulder at times.   When it comes to carry 15-20lbs or more, you really gotta carry on your back.    Gun cases may come with a strap, but a drag bag is meant to be thrown over both shoulders.   I have a really nice rifle/drag bag from Elite Survival Systems and use it for my DMR configured DSarms FAL STG 58.

Even your shotgun should go in a case

I don’t know what it is with hunters, but when I comes to gun cases, I see more neglict with lever actions and shotguns than other rifles.   I guess some people think that if it has glass on it, you need a gun case, but if it all wood, you don’t need one.   I don’t know how many times I’ve been on hunting trips and see my buddies unload there guns and gear and the  shotguns aren’t in any kind of case.  When they pack, they just load up the bags and gear and then toss the guns in right on top.   Well, one of my second most common reasons for having a gun sock or gun cases, soft or hard shell, is not just to protect the gun from getting banged around, it’s also to keep glancing eyes from noticing what you are transporting.  I have 3 friends that have lost firearms in cars, along with laptops, because they had them in visible sight.

When you are travelling, there may be occassions where you may want to stop and get something to eat or have to run and take a leak.   Smash and grabs are the most common ways that I have seen firearms stolen from vehicles and none of them were in gun cases,  if the criminal didn’t see what was in the car, they wouldn’t know what it was or get the temptation.    There are a few criminals in New York that are walking around or sold a few of my friends Glocks and Browning shotguns.   If you are a gun owner, you may want to consider tinting the windows on your vehicles.   There are also areas in the Country where a bad cop may become problematic if it’s obvious that you are transporting firearms.

Transportation and travel with guns

rifle casesSKB and Pelican make gun storage units that will protect your guns if they get knocked around.  The foam pads can always be customized for specific guns and gear and I highly recommend doing so.   I strongly believe in buying gun cases that are for specific firearms and especially so for rifles.   You will be able to fit varying sizes of handguns in the pistol cases depeding on which way you place them, but rifles will get tricky and since most of them will have optics, you gotta be careful how much you pack them.  There are even some rifle cases that can hold your magazines, pistol, and pistol magazines.

There are always pros and cons of certain types of gear for your rifle and there are always trade offs.  A gun sock is good for protecting your guns from some levels of friction, they don’t take up much room in storage and they also don’t add weight to your gun in transport.   Any padded gun case will give you easy  use and easy storage, but when you start transporting firearms that are $1500-$5000 you’re going to want to think about hard rifle cases.   Granted, a sniper drag bag that is properly designed will give you plenty of protection and easy to drag around, but I’m talking about range days or inter State transportation.

The organized gun owner

Blackhawk Gun CasesThe organized gun owner is the guy that shows up at the range and never says, “aw frack” I forgot fill in the blank.     Some people may think that carrying their sight in tools is pointless if the gun is already sighted in.   I’m sure some of you reading this chuckled when they read that, but the reality is the serious shooter knows that even though he’s tightened everything down, stuff comes loose.   If it’s got a screw in it, it will come loose unless regular checkups are peformed.   I read a good write up by Pat Rogers where he suggested marking the tops of everything that needs locking down with a market of some sort.   Probable the best advice I’d pass on to friends.

Your ACOG and your Eotech sight all are easily attached, and they can also easily become dislodged after harsh use or thousands of rounds of ammo.   Mark  your screws so any line that looks out of place, gets retightened before it completely dislodges.   Now what should you carry tools in?   There are sometools that will fit in the grip of your AR15, but if you don’t have a range bag, I strongly suggest Blackhawk gun cases, for rifle, pistol and gear.   I would suggest that you get a bag that is primarily for handguns and tools.   Rifle cases can hold sight in tools and rifle mags and it’s best to associate a case or bag for pistols vs rifles.

A friend of mine owns various caliber Kalashnikov rifles.   The SAR I, SAR II and the SAR III.   For those not familier with the Carbine, they are 3 calibers of basically the same style gun.   He picked up the Large Tactical Rifle Case to keep his 30rd magazines organized.  The SAR I is 7.62×30, SARII is 5.45×39 and the SAR III is 5.56×45.   It is possible get the magazines mixed up and the easiest thing for him to do is  mark each bag with the caliber of the rifle and then just keep 5 mags in the bag.   Granted you may own more magazines, but how often are you going to need to bring more than 5 mags to the range with you?   The bag sling is also a plus.   If you keep loaded magazines in  your Uncle Mikes Rifle Case the bag can get heavy and the sling mags it a little easier to carry.
