Knives, bullets and white lights

There are things that we never leave home without, our wallets and keys for the most part.   If we are CCW holders, we always leave with our guns, a knife can come in more useful than your firearm at times and even more useful, is a white light.   People seem to think that when you hear get a white light for your gun, it means mounting it, but there are other alternatives.   Section 8 Tactical makes a nifty light holder called the Ultimate Retention Device.   This device comes in real handy since it’s not weapon mounted and really doesn’t tie up your hand.

In the last few weeks, I’ve been in the car on camping trips and for fixing flat tires, but times I forgot to bring my flashlight with me.  Recently I took a Streamlight Scorpion LED and tossed it in my car with a Section 8 TacPac stocked with batteries.   With modern LED technology, battery life has been extended dramatically, but it’s good to always know you have backup batteries around for the just incase scenario.  I personally see very little practical difference between Streamlight flashlights and Surefire flashlights.   The Streamlight scorpion works well on a carbine or shotgun and it’s also small enough to fit in your pocket, but not too small to lose.

Looking for a white light?

streamlight flashlightsIf you have ever taken a course at Thunder Ranch, one of the things you will hear from an instructor is to put a white light on your gun.    I think there are valid arguments about how to use lasers and lights on a firearm, but there are mostly liabilities in not having  a light available in defensive situations, especially in your own home.   Why would anyone not put a light on a firearm in there house?  Police are trained to move and turn lights off and on as they move white pretty much voids the argument that it gives the bad guys a place to aim, well, if the guy with the light spots the guy in the dark first, his gun is probable already pointed in the right direction.

If you wanted to, you can use duct tape on a lever action or a double barrel shotgun and use your grandfathers Radio Shack flashlights and it may do the trick, but for only another $25-$30 you can get a white light from Streamlight flashlights that won’t burn a hole in your pocket, and given modern advancements in battery and bulb science,  you will save money on batteries in a very short time period,   The new Streamlight flashlights called the Polytac have a C4 LED that are 2-3x brighter than other LED.   I’ve done side by sider comparisons with my Surefire G2 and I do see the difference.  These flashlights are easily attached to most modern flashlights and can be used on Combat rifles without problems.

40 S&W vs .357 Sig barrel swaps?

gun barrelsWhen I shot my first Sig 229 in .357 Sig the thing that impressed me the most was the flat shooting trajectory.   One of the biggest issues I’ve had shooting 45acp was the adjustments I had to make in bullet trajectory when shooting with my fixed 1911 sights.   Bullet impact may not be something to worry about in close home situations for some people, but for my shooting styles, I want to know exactly where my bullets are going to go from 10-50yds.   I know that bullet weights can make a difference, but I’ve always thought that 230gr FMJ was the proper thing to send downrange from a 1911.   Although I love my 45acp guns, I don’t use them as defensive weapons.    The .357 Sig always seemed to be a step up from the 45acp in certain aspects, like penetration and trajectory.   For Law Enforcement, running into bad guns with body armor is become more and more common and the only thing around that these days is a more powerful firearm.

The .357 Sig is a good step in the right direction without being too much.
What about over-penetration?   From the data I have read, the .357 Sig has better bullet expansion that 9mm and 45acp and that’s exactly what helps slow the bullet down in the first place.   We’re not going to bother talking about stopping power, because if you don’t know this already, it’s not something more experienced shooters attach to handgun calibers because shot placement is more important.   I am not that impressed with the 40 S&W.   It seems to be more bang and ammo weight, but not a flatter shooting round and doesn’t have much more penetration than the best 9mm rounds.   The real reason to have a gun in these calibers is that you can get both in the same gun, if you pick up gun barrels for the other.   The Sig 229 in my opinion is the best balanced. There are certain calibers that are meant for concealment and because that’s what they do best, you should use them in that manor, for combat guns, I think the .357 Sig is a step up from other handguns and the next big leap would be for a Carbine.

Need a suggestion on which gun for home defense?

rifle stocksIf you are thinking about buying your first gun for inside the home, there is no better option than a shotgun.    Some rookie gun shopper may think a shotgun is too powerful, but the reality is there is no better defensive weapon that can be so versatile when it comes to projectile ballistics.  The difference in bullet penetration between a shotgun slug and size 9 shot is tremendous.  Both are incredible leathal at close ranges, but energy is lost very quickly which is an assett in close situations.   Due to modern home construction, there is no better reasoning than to consider what happens to a bullet if it misses the target or if it happens to hit the target and still go on.   There is a saying that there is a lawyer attached to every bullet that exits your gun if it is used in a defensive situation and this very true.

I think the notion of having an Elmer Fudd type of shotgun for home defense is a funny idea, but it’s a very practical defensive weapon.   If you have access to plenty of ammo, shotguns can be reloaded quite easily.   The reality is a pump shogun is a better option due to magazine capacity, but I always warn people that pump shotguns need to be operated properly and people need to understand that they can be very difficult to operate in certain positions.   Short stroking them can also be a problem for a less trained operator, so don’t hand one off to a novice without giving them training.   The Remington 870 has always been my primary shotgun recommendation, but that’s mostly because they can be found for under $250 used, and with just a few bucks  more, a side saddle or magazine tube extension can increase your firepower.   There are also many rifle stocks and accessories that you can mount on them, but please keep in mind that smaller operators will not function as well with heavy guns.  Keep it simple and be practical.

Do we all wear the same size gloves?

rifle stocksAnd the answer is no, we do not, so why do people expect us to be able to shoulder the same size rifles or grip the same size handguns comfortable?  Even if you’re a guy, you’re not all built the same, and luckily the military has caught on to this.    If I had a nickel for every WWII vet I know that made a comment on how big the Garand was and how many of them had trouble shooting one, I’d be rich.   The M1 Garand is a very accurate and powerful rifle, but not everyone could hand them.   If you field a rifle of the same caliber today, and allowed people to adjust the stock for their comfort, recoil issues go away.

In the last few months I’ve had a lot of consultation with new gun owners about home defense weapons and assessing how they could be deployed and used within their homes.   Many of them always thought about handguns being used in their homes and never rifles but there are carbines with rifle stocks that use the same rounds as the pistols.  Everyone seems to think that a rifle is too much or too hard to manage, but now that pistol caliber Carbines are so prevailant.  Why not.    I prefer to mount lights on rifles rather than handguns, and I also know that most novice shooters will be safer and more proficient with a Carbine over a handgun.   At the very least, a rifle is easier to retain and become a baseball bat than a handgun.   Please keep in mind that bullet selection is extremely important when deciding on a Carbine or rifle in your home.   There are some very well thought out M4 rifle stocks, Beretta Storm, and shotgun stocks that are very good for home defense.

Customized rifles and shotguns

rifle stocksThere is another issue that I see come up when taking new students to the range.   I usually bring various military style rifles with me to get people to adjust to recoil and realize the common military style weapons that exist in the world.   Many of these individuals, after a day on the range tend to select the gun that fit them the best.   When I first got into shooting rifles, I started out with all of the military surplus firearms that came into the Country in the early and mid 1990s.   There may never be another time where Soviet style weapons are imported into this Country.   The military warehouses got cleaned out after the fall of the Soviet Empire and American gun owners were the beneficieries.

When I started shooting these rifles, I was lucky if I could hit a pie plate since my shooting expertises was at the novice level.    I’ve shot within 2 inch groups with all of these weapons in the last few years with handloaded ammo so I know that my shooting skills had achieved there peak with these types of firearms.   Another thing I had to do before being able to shoot these rifles comfortable is to upgrade all of the rifle stocks to longer lengths.  I put on various rifle stocks on my SKS rifles, MAK90s and Romanian and Bulgarian AK styles weapons.    I told some of my students that when choosing a Primary rifle or Carbine for Defensive training, don’t hesitate to customize the weapon to your personal comfort.  Put the rifle buttstock on your rifle that you feel comfortable with and make sure you measure your length of pull.   Many of those AK style weapons are too short for us taller types but it is possible to get longer rifle stocks that can get you closer to your comfort zone.

Mounting Flashlights on shotgun

ATI Rifle StocksAfter a few years of actually taking real fighting classes, one of the most common things every instructor told us was, “get a white light” on your fighting weapon.    There are some handgun options where you can hold a flashlight while using a handgun and not have a fixed light on it which makes holster options very limited.   The Section8 Tactical ultimate retention device is a good tool to use, but this isn’t recommended for using with a shotgun or carbine.  I recenltly finished a training course where we used lasers for defensive purposes.   The best tactical for using lasers is knowing when to turn them off.   Yes, using a flashlight or laser is a giveaway, but spotlighting a threat and identifying it is paramount.

The 2nd most common suggestion for a home defense weapon is the shotgun.   Setup a target at 15yds and put 9- 9mm bullets in center mass, then pick up a shotgun with OO buck and pull the trigger.   The shotgun will will that argument every time.   Shotguns are almost always heavy and can be awkward to shoot in some situations, primarily the most commong pump action ones.   ATI Rifle Stocks have a pistol flashlight accessory that works well for putting white light on your shotgun.   You can easily take that $180 used Remington 870 that was being sold at your gun shop and convert it into a brutal close quarters fighting weapon.   I strongly recommend getting the stock length to the appropriate LOP.    I’ve seen plenty of lazy people think they will be find in a course until they get down and dirty and end up punching themselves in the nose with their strong hand when the gun recoils.

When the gunsafe gets tight

Advanced Technology StocksYou might want to think about collapseable stocks or folding stocks.   Guns can take up a lot of space depending on the optics and accessories you put on them.    I’ve seen plenty of my friends go from 12 or 18 rifle safes to full size gun safes just because of the optics they had on rifles.   One thing they never advertise when you are shopping for a gun safe is what kind of rifles it will hold.  Cramming your guns in will only cause damage and make getting guns in and out a headache.   Instead of worrying about having to find a new gun safe, you might want to think about spending a few hundred bucks on changing the stocks of your military style weapons to something that can fold or collapse.

The M4 Carbine rifle is not only a fast and effective CQB weapon, but a very easy to manuever carbine inside a vehicle.   You can easily gain 30% more room in a gun safe by mounting guns on the wall of the safe if you can fit them and you probable will.  I’ve seen friends mount short carbines on the inside door of a safe just because they could.  If properly mounted, an AK with an Advanced Technology Stock side folder will probable mount right on the door and you may even be able to two if you can mount it properly.

Hunting shotguns and defensive shotguns

Advanced Technology StocksMost of us probable got into the shooting world via a shotgun or 22lr rifle.    Those seem to be some of the best instroductory firearms.    You can learn the basics about shooting from a 22lr bolt action rifle and the shotgun is the most versatile firearm out there.    Something like a Remingto 870 shotgun is normally available with an 18-28 barrel on it and can be found in 12 or 20 gauge.   The shotgun can be used for pheasant hunting all the way up to deer just by altering the type of shot or using a slug.  Depending on the sights you have on the gun, you may want to consider rifle sights if you plan on using slugs very often.
The shotgun is handsdown the most effective close range weapon.   I’ve demonstrated the use of Ar15s and handguns against targets under 50yds and then shown students a Remington 870 using buckshot and there is always a clear winner when it comes to hit ration and damage done.   A shotgun may be a powerful tool and possible too much for some users, but you can easily modify an inexpesive gun show find that costs less than $200 to a practical defensive shotgun.  Advanced Technology Stocks have a few updgrades and add ons that will give you comfort when it comes to choosing a home defense weapon.

A better look

Advanced Technology StocksBack in the 1990s there was a lot of Eastern Com-Block guns coming into the Country.   There were also a lot of MAK90s and SKS Rifles coming in from China.   Not sure why there were so many Chinese guns coming in, but there must have been some house cleaning from the Militarys over there.   You may be able to find a well made 7.62×39 rifle being made in the USA now, but they are pretty expensive and will cost you about the same as a new AR15 or more.   Some of the nicest AKs are being by Arsenal Arms and they look and shoot great.

You may at some point come across a really beat up and ugly looking AK variant called a MAK90.   These came in the country and normal AK parts, but had to have a thumbhole stock put on it and the pistol grip was removed.   This has to be one of the biggest eye sores ever put a a military style rifle.   Probable one of the most un-natural configurations.   There is a way to legally change the stock to a nicer looking form from Advanced Technology stocks,  theywill work on the Egyptian Maadi or Chinese MAK90.  This Fiber Force Stock
