5.11 tactical holsters do they still make clothing?

I’m not going to get on the bandwagon and say 5.11 is a bad company, but I will say that the company has far out extended itself.   I have an own many items from 5.11, but after a failed attempt and trying to get back into wearing some of their stuff with the 5.11 jeans, I’m really annoyed that if I want to try to order any of the other pants online, I’m probable going to have sizing issues.  I have to wear a full size large in the pants that I presently own and I have no idea how they got so out of  hand when it came to consistency.   I see 5.11 watches and holsters, but I’d like to see them go back to making clothing right.

The 5.11 thumb drive holsters are another way of doing something, and if it floats your boat, they float it.   I don’t like jumping around with too many  holster variations because like driving many different vehicles in a short time  period, there will eventually be a time you reach for something and it’s not where you thought it was.  Retention or locking holsters can be very important,  but sometimes its nice to just put on  Fobus holsters and you’re all ready for Winter/ Jacket carry or open carry.  Sometimes you have to stick to the  basics and consistency is paramount

Range holsters another category

Fobus HolstersThere is always going to be a debate with any tactical or firearm accessory.   What is it being used for and is it up to the task at hand.   A concealment holster might not be a $180 leather shoulder rig, it coule be something as simple as $12 pocket holster.    There are tactical holsters that will secure your pistol while your running through the mud and training in a Carbine Course, or you can have a IWB holster for your everyday CCW.

Another thing to think about having in your box of holsters is a simple range holster.   If you are at a gun club and  planning on doing some serious range blasting, you might want to consider a range holster.   A range holster is usually something that you can wear outside your belt which is a clip on our paddle style.    Whenever some of my friends and I are going to be pulling an all day range trip, we’re usually carrying a full size handgun and IWB is not a comfortable carry option.  Fobus Holsters are in the $20 range and if you’re wearing a good belt, you won’t notice the weight of a full size gun like a Beretta 92 or Glock 17.   It’ll make carrying and practicing much easier than constantly picking your gun off a table.

Preference and comfort

Don Hume HolstersIf you feel comfortable carrying the same handgun all year long, you may be in the minority.   Many feel the need to get into a summer/ winter carry routine and I feel that is fairly common.   Carrying a fiream IWB in the depth of winter may mean your gun is under 2 or 3 layers of clothing which can mean murphys law may come quicker.

Don hume holsters has a nice Jit Slide holster which depending on your body type might not be as uncofortable as a paddle holster, but still can be worn outside of the belt.   The real issue every  CCW holder needs to deal with is, “is this comfortable” and “can it be concealed”.    There are always different scenarios and we must train to deal with threats, but coming home with injuries or discomfort is easy to prevent if we do the reasearch first.

Seasonal Transitions for CCW

Fobus HolstersAny experienced and well trainied CCW holder will tell you that it may be wise to change your holster or carry gun during the change in seasons.    I’ve spotted more than a few CCW holders out in the open when it was pretty obvious that the machismo took the best of them and they just had to keep carrying that 1911 IWB at 5 o’clock in the summer months as they were 5’7″ and didn’t realize that when they were standing in line at the super market that I could see the T-shirt bunched up around the belt line.

Concealment is suppose to mean concleament and there are a few places in the State where a Sheriff may fine you if he can spot your firearm.   We’re free to carry in whichever fashion we prefer, but some ways of carrying firearms can hurt you if you fall down or things get physical.    I often recommend people consider pocket carry or IWB in the warmer months and in the Fall or Winter, they should consider a good jacket that opens easily and a paddle holster.   Fobus holsters will only cost you about $20 and they area easy to take off and put on and IMHO are more secure than a clip on OWB holster.

IWB for Concealement

Don Hume HolstersThe concealed carry market is exploding with various tactical apparel and holster designs.   Most gun owners that are not in law enforcement have the ability to select whichever firearm suits there comfort level and that will change depending on the environement they are in.      Sometimes the idea of getting a $150 or higher shoulder holster sounds like fun and you can announce to everyone in the room that you are carrying a full size handgun, but that’s not really concealment.   It’s hard to really give suggestions on what is best for concealment, because some of the best shooters I know carry a small auto or revolver in a pocket and I wouldn’t want to mess with them.

Carrying OWB may be more comfortable in seated positions, but this is still depending on how big the gun is.    I’ve hit my funny bone more than a few times with OWB holsters, but they seem to get more use in the Winter months when wearing a heavy jacket.    IWB seems to give an user more versatility in the clothing they wear as long as the shirt is not tucked in.   Don Hume Holsters makes several clip on IWB holsters that are easy to take off and are held securely as long as you use a proper belt.
