Brass knuckle gun grips!!!

I got stories to tell you about the things my Grandfather use carry that are now all illegal to carry,  everything from night sticks to brass knuckles.   I wish I would have been able to get a hold of them before his Estate sold everything, but I don’t  think my parents would have let a 14yr old keep those.   I recently watched a Gabe Suarez video about the AK rifle and there was a short segment about fighting with the AK.   I have found the AK to have several sharp areas that can cut or hurt the operator if they don’t watch their movement.   The good thing about that is you also have a nice sharp a rough stick to beat a bad guy with if you ever happen to be in the nightmare situation where you run out of ammo.

When it comes to handguns, they always retain the weight that they have and can be used as a striking weapon, but pistol whipping is probable not a very good tactic to train with.   Hogue grips are on all of my primary CCW guns except one and I don’t think that will ever change.   Having an improved retention over you firearm is important because anyone trained to know how the body moves is going to be able to take the gun away from you if you aren’t paying attention to retaining it.  When I trained with my primary fighting pistol, for combat, when the gun runs dry it can be used as a tool to poke and smash.   If need be it has more weight than most hammers if that doesn’t give you a sense of what an empty gun is capable of doing.

Having fun but having the right stuff

I would have to say that the vast majority of those that have anything more than a flashlight and optic on the M4 are probable putting something on our guns that we really don’t need, but just enjoy having on.   There’s nothing wrong with having an LWRCI upper with a quad rail or a MidWest quad rail if you think you can put it to use, but when we actually have to carry the Carbine for any real length of time, we’ll wish we could strip a few extra pounds of weight off the gun.  Many of our Staff have been attending competition shoots lately that have been really well run.   These events are everything from battle scenarios or even Zombie shoots.

Last  year in Pennsylvania we attended a Carbine shoot where the the attendees has to sign in at 8am and once they left the club house, they couldn’t drop off any gear and had to lug it all with them for the day.   All of the competitors were carrying M4 or AR15 variants and a few had AK rifles.    Ammunition loads were approximately 400rds of rifle and 100rds of handgun ammo.    I enjoy these events because we get too see some real hard use of tactical gear and tactical accessories.   We tend to not see things fail at these shoots because the competitors are in the higher class as far as skill and the types of firearms they use.   If you ever want to see what kind of optics work and which firearms and when things jam, go to a competition shoot at your gun club and sit back and watch.

Pistol Grips

Pistol GripsHogue grips are molded from a synthetic rubber that will help you keep your grip during rapid fire or slow fire engagements.   There are other options for replacing your factory grips on semi-autos and revolvers.   Remember that it is normal to have to customize a firearms grips because all of us are not the same, and one way to improve our accuracy, and shooting skills is to customize a firearm to our particular tastes.   You may want to think about this the next time you go to a gun shop and check out the same model firearm, but with different grips.

Some firearm manufacturers have caught on to this and are now selling the handguns with removable backstraps which will adjust the distance the trigger is from your hand.   Glocks are being sold this was as well as  the M&P line of pistols.  I have a lot of friends that have put packmayr pistol grips on there Glocks long before Glock caught on.   As firearms evolve so will the accessories adjustability.   Decal gun grips are a simple answer to having a better hold on older model Glocks.

Gun Modifications that are worth it

Pistol GripWhile there are many arguments about which firearm may suit you, one issue that the novice shooters often need to be educated about is that even if you are shopping for a gun that is reliable and a caliber you can handle,  everyones hands are different and knowing that a gun grip can be easily customized or modified is something often over looked.

I have picked up various firearms over the years and one thing I have ended up doing was replacing the factory versions of the grips to Hogue or Pachmayr.    There are some drawbacks to using fingered groove grips, some complain about hand cramping after long range sessions, but the reality is that you have to try it before you know it feels right.   Accuracy is another improvement I see whenever I reccomend people try different pistol grip styles for the same gun.   I’ve seen shooters change their opinions about which gun to buy just bases on the grip they were using.
