Now this is going to get interesting

I have walked many a gun show floor and walked by the booths that had all of the assemble and disassemble books.   Those are useful, but at many times very hard to read.   Little arrows and pictures can still make it hard to comprehend.   Along comes the VHS and DVD world and AGI has done a good job on this.   I’m also a very big fan of Clint Smith and his DVD collection although pretty expensive really turns out to be worth the money spent.   For the most part they are well produced, but a few spotty parts should have been re-shot.

Panteao Productions has there shit together.  I just saw a glimpse of the next in line, Travis Haley, who recently left Magpul, and started Haley Strategic Partners, is working with Panteao Productions to release “Adaptive Carbine” his first production since leaving Magpul.  Travis is kinda the rockstar of the gun DVDs.  The production on the Magpul Dynamics DVD series are outstanding.  I’ve only been able to watch the Make Ready Series a few times, but I haven’t been let down.  If I pick all of the best firearm instructors I know,  I’m betting there all on the schedule with Panteao Productions.

Firearm training and DVD instructional video just broader

I have a great many gun dvd’s in my collection and they are mostly of value, but I did have a few that I lent to a friend for comical reasons, but unfortunately they got lost and there’s no way in hell I’ll spend the money for another batch of them.    Now that DVD editing has gotten better and easier to do, more firearms trainers are taking to the camera eye.   There are several people that I would love to train with, but like many people I can’t take 3 days off from my day job.  I subscribed to the Outdoor Channel over a year ago, but sadly most of the shows I watch are producing so few shows that I’ve already seen the same ones 4 or 5 times and I’m itching for something a little more complicated.

We just got word that Travis Haley just got done shooting “Adaptive Carbine” training course and will be out in a few months.    Considering the names that I am seeing on the Make Ready gun dvds,  I’m sure that Fernando Coelho knows the people to get in front of the camera and how to sell a DVD.   I think all of these DVD’s are a great thing because the production is so well done and gun owners will have easy access to important tactics and safe gun handling skills.   I think there are too many people out there that own AR15 rifles that don’t know the proper ways to maintain or handle them.

Firearm Instruction from a DVD

I remember that I use to walk around gun shows all the time and see some really out dated military training books and firearm training VHS tapes.   I skipped over these because they looked old, but eventually I ran into a few friends that owned some of them and I got to watch them.   I remember the first time I heard somebody run through firearm safety, and gun assembling and disassembling on a AR1 5 it was new to me.   One of my sponsored firearm instructors has a pile of DVD’s in his home collection that were all taken from his VHS collection.   Some of the best information about gun fights has been out there before and they are what most people call the fundamentals.   You can win a gun fight with a faulty firearm if you know how to deal with malfunctions.

If you want to get a well produced and highly informative instruction and don’t have the time to take a 2-3 day Carbine Course.   I am a big fan of the Mapgul DVD series.   I though the Aerial Platform DVD was the least interesting, but it’s also the least expensive.    The Art of the Tactical Carbine volumes I and II are outstanding and there is information on them that I have not see other places.  I have not watched another Carbine DVD series that comes close to be as informative about the M4 Carbine and team training.   The Art of the Dynamic handgun is a very well produced video for concealed carry and duty carry situations.

Magpul The Art of the tactical carbine

Magpul the art of the tactical carbineI  have a few novice Carbine gun owners that have recently been thinking about taking training courses, but really didn’t have the ability to go away for 2-3 days straight.   For many in the shooting community, we have wives or job commitments that make it difficult to get 18-30hrs away.   Even though I consider myself to be an above average operator,  with a few decades of experience under my belt, I have a fairly large collection of firearm instruction DVDs.   I keep the bad instructional DVDs as references, but I only show certain ones to friends and family.   Now that instructors can put out video at cheaper costs due to advances in video production technology, there are more and more videos coming out.   I have some of Gabe Suarez’s videos, Clint Smith, Rob Pincus ect. and they all have their good points.    Some are very basic, while others have good advanced lessons.

A few years ago I went through my entire DVD collection to look for the ones to lend to a friend that was buying  his first AR15.   I realized that Carbine training was a weak point in my collection and I looked around the internet for other options.   Magpul Dynamics Art of the tactical carbine is issued in Volume 1-3DVD and Volume II-4 DVD.   There are some basic lessons being taught in each DVD, and I have to admit that I take issue with the way some of the tactics are taught, but not for any safety reasons.   This is a much faster paced video instruction, but it is well worth the money.   I recommend watching Volume I atleast 2xs and making sure you absorb all of the info before moving on to Volume II.   There are always things that you don’t pick up the first time, and from my experience, I still notice things here and there every time I watch one of these.
