Looking for a red dot sight? Why not consider the RMR sights

There are plenty of reason to consider this small compact red dot sight.   Yes it is an expensive optic but we’ve seen Police Departments in our area remove optics from Police Officers in training when they showed up with red dot sights that were made in China or were know to be inferior.  Their exact quotes were that any sight that was not made by Trijicon, Eotech or Aimpoint it must be put under review and may not be approved.   We’ve seen most  police officers stick with whatever they could find in the $400 price range and that usually means an Aimpoint Pro or an Eotech, but many forget to consider the Trijicon RMR sights.  There are many different optics to consider but the RMR has a very long battery life and is very lightweight.

Fiber optics have their limits, battery powered optics have their limits and you have to train to fight if your optics fail you.   The Trijicon RMR sights we sell are flying out the door, primarily the RM08 green triangle.   One of the things you have to consider is the brightness of a red dot and not always the size.   A small red dot with a very bright setting may actually block your view as badley as a larger MOA dot.   Sometimes if you want precision you have to consider going to a lower power setting and not always worry about your red dot size.

The differences between hand held flashlights, weapon mounted and lasers and applications

crimson trace laser grips I got a good course in flashlight uses yesterday when a very well known Police instructor showed me how washouts and white outs occur when entering a room, there is such a thing now as too much power candle power.  Everyone is getting shocked when they see the output from some of these new Surefire and Streamlight flashlights and probable 350 Lumens is about what the average Surefire or Streamlight flashlight can put out.   I got a good review of some of the Pelican flashlights and it’s pretty obvious that the technology has greatly advanced.   Having high output is useful outdoors but indoors it can be liability.   Having a light that has adjustable output with a high and low is a good idea.   Also, there are big differences between having a search light vs a point light on your firearm.   Now go back to thinking about how much light you really need.

I have an LWRC M6A2 that I’ve had around for several years and recently had to make some changes due to my angled foregrip cracking.  I have been looking over the Crimson Trace Laser grips and thinking about putting a laser  on  it.   Using night vision in outdoor environments is a real possibility for me and I’ve learned to use lasers as pointing devices when working in team situations.   Its much easier to put a laser on a door in a building to identify the threat rather than to yell out which color and how many doors down the threat is sitting in.  Clearing rooms in a house after a domestic call or an alarm goes off is probable one of the most dangerous things police deal with and knowing how to use lights and lasers in those environment is very important.

Why would you want to wear Tru-Spec products? An honest review of their tactical pants

truspec tactical pantsWe did not know what we were going to be carrying when we found out several years ago that the Elite Operator Tactical line was going to cease to make clothing and also the warning signs about what was going on with the Woolrich Elite Series tactical line.   Those products were very popular with customers that wanted comfort and tactical clothing that fit the way it was suppose to.  In all of the  years we sold those products, nobody called us up complaining that pants shrank or road up on them when they sat down.   Fabrics and quality control are things that not every camouflage pant is going to have.  There are some paintball camo pattterns that are cool but they are very much a BDU and not very comfortable.

The new Tru-Spec Gen 2 BDU pants are really the best BDU pants we’ve sold because they have a zipper fly and not those out dated button down fly.   The Tru-Spec 24/7 series pants are uniquely designed have have very specified pockets for knives or flashlights.  The truspec tactical pants like the new boot cut Gunny pant is a more updated look with open pockets and larger knife or flashlight slots.   These have been the most popular tactical pants for us right now because of the prices that we sell them in comparison to much of the Blackhawk and 5.11 product line.   Much of this is about preference, but quality is definitely there.

New tactical pants for this Fall? How about lower profile pants?

tactical pantsIn 2013 we saw the launch of the Tru-Spec Simple Tactical product line and considering how well it has sold so far I expect that there will be a womens line and possible a few more colors.   The Simple Tactical product line is basically a mild tactical pant that probable has 40% fewer pockets if you compare it to 5.11 or other Tru-Spec tactical pants, namely the 24/7 series.    That’s a really nice pant for $39.95 and sometimes you can get them cheaper especially during the 1,2,3 sales that Tru-Spec has done atleast 2x’s.   Some people don’t like particular waistbands and the Simple tactical is more stretch.  You will notice that those will be tru to your waist size and you won’t be able to stow gear is pretend you are really a smaller waist.

This year we took on a few 5.11 products which we normally stayed away from but now that Woolrich Elite Series Tactical is no longer making their product line, we brought in the 5.11 covert Khaki 2.0 which is a good improvement over the regular Cover Khaki.   These pants are now the least tactical pants we (looking that is) and after washing an wearing I didn’t notice any of the shrinkage that so many of our customers complain about.  I guess 5.11 put a little more quality into their white color tactical clothing.  We’re still testing out various types of shirts to see if we can find anything anywhere near as nice as the Woolrich Elite Series concealed carry shirts.   We really missed that product line.

What the difference between the Wilson Combat 47D and the ETM magazines? Why switch?

Wilson Combat Magazines

Wilson Combat Magazines

The first thing I said to myself when we started carrying the ETM magazines was “why would I bother” and then I looked up the info and reviews about them and found  out that it was really all about competition shooting more than it was about another reliable 1911  magazine.   The Wilson combat magazines are the most expensive magazines that we sell for the 1911 but in the 16yrs I’ve been using them, I have had a very long and good experience in using them.   I have seen people crack them but I have never had that happen, over time and magazine is going to wear out and even the Magpul pmags I have in my inventory have shown some cracks after about 8yrs.   The best thing about the Wilson magazines for the 1911 are that the followers are very well balanced.  They move up and down without tilting which makes a very big difference when feeding FMJ into the throat of a 1911 handgun.

Rotating your magazine in your inventory is very important if you want to keep on top of your reliability.  For people that are  shooting thousands of rounds of ammunition through their guns each year, knowing when  you need to change out the springs on  your Wilson Combat magazines before they start to fail is really a good policy.   I have a few other parts on my Colt 1991A1 that could use some checkups on but I’ll probable take it to a gunsmith to replace hammer springs ect.  I have not run hollow point ammunition through my 1911s in a long time, but to prevent over penetration I probable should do some research into getting some of the

The Versatility of the AR15, the shooters and the firearm

Adams UppersThere are a great many advancements the AR15 has gone through since it’s original inception in the 1950’s.  The gun is probable in about a Generation 5 if you want to look at it the way Glock handguns are updated, actually, it’s probable been more so.   It was always a very easy platform to shoot from but now that competition shooting has asked those that engineer and design these guns to do more with it.   There are so many rail systems, trigger systems, barrel lengths and weights, that there is so much to choose from, that I really think that the majority of operators over think there applications.   The quad rail was a cool thing when it was being sold on AR15’s 10yrs ago, but many found out real fast that all it did was add weight to the rifle and most people didn’t put more than a grip, optic, co-witness iron sights, and usually a flashlight.

Now that the Magpul MOE stocks have taken a strong hold in the industry, people are not wasting space and energy with the M4 Carbines.   There seems to be a new trend towards gas piston designs  like the Adams Uppers due to the improved designs of piston guns.  There were a few companies that test them out like the AR18, but it was always kind of considered to be an odd choose and it didn’t look like an AR15.  Now that things have changed, I have to stop and stare at a gun for a few seconds to see if it’s a piston gun or a direct impingement.  The Ruger 556 is a rock solid design, but Adams would be my next choose and then finally the LWRC guns.

2yrs into carrying the Tru-Spec product line

truspec tactical pantsThis is our second year of carrying the Tru-Spec tactical clothing line and we are very happy with what our customers are telling us.   The reviews on tactical clothing made by Tru-Spec are much better than what we are hearing  about 5.11.   We carry some of the 5.11 tactical apparel and gear like the backpacks and molle stuff, but we get a lot of complaints about shrinkage and lack of durability.  If you just compare the polo shirts that men or wome would wear in an Office environment,  The Woolrich Elite tactical polos in style 44435 would be the most durable but they are much heavier in weight.  I’ve had the same Tru-Spec 24.7 series tactical polo for a year and it has faded and the name tag has worn, but it’s still in tact.

The biggest winner that we discovered were the 24/7 series tactical pants, many of our customers told us they had a great product line and their womens Truspec tactical pants were very well received unlike some of the other clothing companies we dealing with.    I’ve heard some good things about the Blackhawk tactical clothing line for women also, but price points are something we are seriously thinking about.  We noticed several vendors in the area have stopped carrying the Vertx product lines because there were too many issues in trying to get product and the starting cost of the tactical pants were around $64.99.   The Tru-Spec Simple Tactical product line is a really smart thing, there are some variations in fit and sizing if you are already wearing the 24/7 series, but we have a good exchange policy so let us know if something doesn’t fit.

Backpacks, range bags, and customizing.

5.11 bagsI have so many brand names of nylon gear in my house it’s not funny.   I don’t even know some of the manufacturers names because they weren’t tagged very well.  It seems with the number of sales calls I get every year, there are about as many nylon makers as there are custom kydex holster makers.  There are certain things that we just push off to other companies because it’s too time consuming.   People are very particular about the type of bag they want and they will know it when they see it, but the problem is they want to hold it in their hands.    There are different points of placing molle straps and sometimes a bag has too much and sometimes too little.   There are is an endless supply of so called “tactical” backpacks, but unless you have the time to travel, good luck trying to find a store that  has evertything.

One of the main reasons we opened up a tactical store was so that our local customers could check stuff out before they purchased it.   5.11 tactical is a monster of a company and they have so many cool products that many of our Police and EMS personnel prefer the 5.11 bags primarly the Rush products.  The Rush messenger and Rush 24 and 72 are extremely popular with paramedics and ambulance companies.  Some military guys have been buying just about everything that we sell in multicam which makes the 5.11 Rush 72 backpack very popular.   We normally stock all of these items in our Broomall, Retail store so stop in and check them out.

People with bad feet might want to look into wearing these Original Swat Boots

original swat bootsI’ve had bad feet for several years, including years of treatments and then 2 surgeries on the same foot.   The year after the last surgery I had my sales rep walk in and show me the Original Swat footwear companies tactical footwear line.   Several Employees and I got free stuff and instantly love the feel of the boots.  I was instantly won over with the style 1232 boots that had a bubble on the bottom that gave extra shock support.   Many Police Officers and even school security like the Style 1261 boots because they are a lower cut boot with the same foot support.   These boots are very light and the biggest shock was how well priced they are.   We have a  lot of Police Officers come in here on their clothing allowances and are always pinching pennies trying to squeeze as much of their duty or tactical gear into that budget.

These boots are polishable and there are composite toe and waterproof boots.  Along with the extra foot support are the 1234 Original Swat boots that are almost identical to the 1232 but are waterproof.  I usually get about 9 months out of them before I feel the support start to go but these boots are worn 7 days a week because I needed the support to get through a work week.   I’ve had customers tell me they’ve gotten 2yrs out of them.  This year there will  be a lower 5 inch waterproof boot which is something many of our customers have been asking us for. We also have some really good blowout sales on the Original Swat footwear line from styles that were discontinued after newly improved designs came out.

Most versatile rain jacket?

Truspec softshell jacketsWe’ve sold a lot of outwear over the years and the Woolrich Elite Concealed Carry Chino and the SigTac jackets are going to be missed because they were all very well made items but somehow those companies just couldn’t compete in the tactical apparel world.   I’ve not seen a SigTac jacket in years but people still and ask us what happened to them.   There are a few links out there that direct people to us from gun forums but they are badly outdated.   The Woolrich Elite Series tactical barn coat that is another item that was well liked but fell off the production line very early.   5.11 tactical has some nice stuff but they have gotten expensive and plenty of people have fallen off the 5.11 wagon just based on price increase.

When it comes to concealed carry jackets, well, there aren’t too many companies that are going to mass product something like that because there are so many firearms that designing a jacket around that isn’t really cost effective.   If you want a very useful tactical jacket, the TruSpec softshell jackets are a very big hit and we have been selling them with the American Flag patch  which gives them a cool yet patriotic look.   These softshell jackets are going to be tight against your body but they have access points so  you can still get in to your gear or guns.   We’ve had several customers come in our store that said it’s the most versatile jacket they own because it’s something you can wear in the Fall or Winter or even a mild summer day that will help keep you dry.
