Magpul Stocks and Accessories improving proficiency

Several years ago I sat in on an Appleseed Project and watched people learn basic riflemen skills.  It’s a science to put a bullet in the same hole, just in the same way NASA puts a space probe on mars.   Getting the trajectory and figuring out your bullet ballistics are all the same science.   Velocity, drag, windage, gravity all have the same affect on any object, whether it’s on Earth, Mars or Jupiter.   There are known factors in accuracy and it’s all about “getting” there.  One of the things we can help you out in is getting the right fitting accessories that help you gain proficiency and Magpul Stocks and Accessories can help you get there.

I don’t like to tell people what they should buy, but tell them what they should consider.   I’m still running a quad rail on my primary which is something that is often considered an over-kill or outdated, but it’s still what I call practical.   I’m not sure sure key-mod and M-Lok accessories are going to be around 10yrs from now, but I can tell you there will still be quad-rails.   Magpul Stocks and Accessories will give you the right length of pull, the right grip, the right cheek weld, and also help you illuminate a target and if you figure  out what the perfect match is, help you get on target every time.

A recent stock failure and no time to mess around

I’ve had 2 stock failures in recent  years and one was my fault for not checking the carbine to make sure it was tight after thousands of rounds of use and the other was during a Carbine course where I showed a student how to clear a malfunction by slamming the butt stock on the ground.  There is a YouTube video of someone hurting their  hand with a CTR stock but there are obvious limites on how much banging around a gun or accessory can take.  When there is a fire and you have to break the glass to get to an axe, you don’t need to hit the glass hard that you break the axe handle and end up with a metal wedge.

I’ve had issues with firearms in the past, usually finicky handguns where I just got tired of the intermittent magazine failure that I just replaced all of the mags springs and recoil springs and was done with it.  If you are looking for gun accessories and not sure what you want, take a serious look at the Magpul accessories for the AR15 rifle and  you’ll probable find what you are looking for.   You can’t beat the MOE stocks and accessories but there are always unique things out there that the major firearm accessory companies don’t have.

gun grips and bare hands

As we progress into the tactical accessories market, the more we realize that when we make  one change to a firearm there is a good chance we may have to make another.   For example, there are a lot of rifle scope and rifle stocks  out there, but one may feel too short in the summer when we are wearing a t-shirt, and the other may feel too long if we are wearing a heavy coat.   I still laugh when I hear people say that the AK was built for short people, when the reality was that it was designed for people wearing winter clothing, and that’s why the stocks are so short.

The M4 carbine stock is designed for people that are wearing body armor and may not fit into your shoulder very well if you are not wearing any.   These are minor things to think about, but just as we think about the type of holster we are wearing, we should think about what kind rifle stocks, and how we are going to be shouldering and using a Carbine or Rifle.   Anyone that has gone on any extensive hunting trip will gladly get rid of an extra 2-3 lbs of weight if they can which is why so many prefer a Mini 14 for hunting over a 5rd AR15 type of rifle.

Customized rifles and shotguns

rifle stocksThere is another issue that I see come up when taking new students to the range.   I usually bring various military style rifles with me to get people to adjust to recoil and realize the common military style weapons that exist in the world.   Many of these individuals, after a day on the range tend to select the gun that fit them the best.   When I first got into shooting rifles, I started out with all of the military surplus firearms that came into the Country in the early and mid 1990s.   There may never be another time where Soviet style weapons are imported into this Country.   The military warehouses got cleaned out after the fall of the Soviet Empire and American gun owners were the beneficieries.

When I started shooting these rifles, I was lucky if I could hit a pie plate since my shooting expertises was at the novice level.    I’ve shot within 2 inch groups with all of these weapons in the last few years with handloaded ammo so I know that my shooting skills had achieved there peak with these types of firearms.   Another thing I had to do before being able to shoot these rifles comfortable is to upgrade all of the rifle stocks to longer lengths.  I put on various rifle stocks on my SKS rifles, MAK90s and Romanian and Bulgarian AK styles weapons.    I told some of my students that when choosing a Primary rifle or Carbine for Defensive training, don’t hesitate to customize the weapon to your personal comfort.  Put the rifle buttstock on your rifle that you feel comfortable with and make sure you measure your length of pull.   Many of those AK style weapons are too short for us taller types but it is possible to get longer rifle stocks that can get you closer to your comfort zone.

Flashlights and optics and batteries

VLTOR Rifle StocksEver since the gun community went from the A2 style AR15s to the M4 Configurations,  the AR15 became the most modified and accessorized firearm in existance.   I sometimes have to stair at some of these AR15 designs to tell if it is even a 5.56 gun anymore.   The AR15s these days are the old style Direct Impingement guns and also various style pistol driven guns.   There are plenty of lower grade stock accessories that look cool and tactical, but they won’t hold up to bad weather and rough play.  The old “you get what you paid for” is still true today.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to picking a configurations.   Leave yourself open to as many options as possible, and keep it as basic as possible.   The onle thing I would also suggest to people is leave a flashlight on or next to where you keep your gun.   It’s always good to have a white light available.   If you are putting  a lot of accessories on your gun, you may want to think about batter storage.   Section8 Tactical has had the M4 Tac-Pac on the market for people that don’t want a lot of accessories with compartements and I have to be honest, I’ve seen guys dump batteries and cleaning accessories from bumping guns around.   There are some top tier firearm stock options like the VLTOR Rifle Stocks.   These rifle stocks can hold 2 AA batteries or 1 CR123 Battery in the back compartment.  The storage units can hold 3 AA batteries on each side or 4 CR123 Batteries.

Reasons for change

VLTOR Rifle StocksIt’s hard to know if a configuration is best for you.   I recently got a phone call from a shooter that sounded like he was new to the AR15 family.   He was asking about which rifle stock configuration was best and then I asked him what his LOP or length of pull was and he had no idea.    The reasons for adjustable stocks is because each operator issued a Carbine has a different arm length.   I’ve  punched myself in the nose with rifles and shotguns that were too short for me and modified several of my M1A rifles to fit my comfort.   There are also other reasons for having stock modifications.   If you are wearing a heavy winter coat or body armor you will want to shorten your stock.    Next time  you are at a gun shop or a shooting range, ask other shooters if you can hold there gun and see how it feels.  Check the gun stock manufacturer and do some research.

There are different levels of weaponry and modifications depending on the deployment.   Vltor rifle stocks were designed for Marine Corps and Special forces.   The design of the updgrades to your AR15 are for improved ergonomics and for increase storage capabilities.   The notion of storing gun parts or batteries on your firearms  is debateable, but there are plenty of people that like this reasoning.   The VLTOR rifle stocks also have a cheekweld and buttstock design that will increase your lock on to target.

Hunting shotguns and defensive shotguns

Advanced Technology StocksMost of us probable got into the shooting world via a shotgun or 22lr rifle.    Those seem to be some of the best instroductory firearms.    You can learn the basics about shooting from a 22lr bolt action rifle and the shotgun is the most versatile firearm out there.    Something like a Remingto 870 shotgun is normally available with an 18-28 barrel on it and can be found in 12 or 20 gauge.   The shotgun can be used for pheasant hunting all the way up to deer just by altering the type of shot or using a slug.  Depending on the sights you have on the gun, you may want to consider rifle sights if you plan on using slugs very often.
The shotgun is handsdown the most effective close range weapon.   I’ve demonstrated the use of Ar15s and handguns against targets under 50yds and then shown students a Remington 870 using buckshot and there is always a clear winner when it comes to hit ration and damage done.   A shotgun may be a powerful tool and possible too much for some users, but you can easily modify an inexpesive gun show find that costs less than $200 to a practical defensive shotgun.  Advanced Technology Stocks have a few updgrades and add ons that will give you comfort when it comes to choosing a home defense weapon.
