Winter Jackets and carrying gear

Tactical JacketsI’ve gotten the questions numerous times about what kind of jacket is best for winter carry.   I’m not one to suggest that carrying a firearm in an outwear jacket is a good idea.   There are expensive jackets out there where you can carry a gun and retain it in the jacket, but weight distribution is almost always an issue.  Sometimes people need to realize that winter carry isn’t going to be as easy as summer carry because cold environments are going to mean big jackets or multiple layers of clothing.

One new option that may help you in your search for a spring/fall/winter carry option is the new Eotac Field Jacket, this is a very military looking jackets, but has a tactical jacket look that is a great thing to wear over layers of winter clothing.   The Eotac Field Jacket is not a very heavy jacket even though it may look like it.   The Field Jacket has multiple pockets for knives, flashlights, cell phones, pepper spray and spare magazines.   The field jacket does not hang very lowe on the waiste so it  may not be good for some ways of carrying, but even if this jacekt is zipped up, the front of the jacket is cut in a manor where reaching under and retrieving a firearm from a should holster or belt holster is not that difficult.

Hobbies, accessories and reasons

Tactical GearThere area a lot of good upgrades one can do to a firearm, a fighting rifle should be customized to fit an operator.  Advanced Technology makes some quick and easy upgrades for your shotgun or carbine that can give you better grip or balance.  Shotgun shell holders on the buttstock or riding side saddle is a practical tactical upgrade you can do on your remington 870.  The fiberforce stock for the MAK90 is a way to legally get around some firearm bans and are a big step up compared to the stupid thumbhole stocks.    Attach a rifle sling that fits yoru purpose from Blue Force Gear, they come in 1 point, 2 point and 3 point attachements. Minor firearm modifications make need to be done to attache rifle slings, but do some research on various rifle sling configurations to see what works for you.

We’ve all seen the massive accessorizing of firearms in recent years.   Firearms likes SKS rifle and Mini 14s are not immune to the firearm attachements and modifications that have run rampant in the AR15 community.   In my opinion, there are a lot of firearm owners out there that had their Legos taken away from them and they brought that mindset into gun accessorizing and tactical gear stockpiling.    That’s about as harsh as I can be about why people do what they do to their firearms, but some of it is for hobbie reasons, some for practical reasons, and some because people have the obsessive compulsive behavior of needing to spend money.

Winter Options

Tactical ApparelYou’ve heard that word before, but this time we actually have something that is tactical, useful, warm and makes concealed carry easier in the winter months.   There are plenty of half-zip sweatshirts out there, you see them at Cabela’s or your local outdoor sporting goods store, but all of them make carrying a little more difficult in cold weather.   Wearing slightly over-sized T-Shirts make carrying easier, but after putting on more than 2 layers of clothing, carrying IWB or OWB becomes dangerously cumbersome.
The Eotac Style 501 Half-Zip sweatshirt gives an operator another tactical apparel option.  The 14 oz. 80% cotton / 20% polyester, preshrunk and washed sweatshirt looks and feels like a normal sweatshirt, but the sides of the shirt has break open flaps that make drawing your firearm easier, or just reaching for your cell phone for that matter.   Most never liked the idea of carrying a firearm outside of their body  in a jacket or vest.   I really like this item.   With a nice base layer over a T-Shirt,  then 1 of these 501 Sweatshirts, and you’re good to go for most Cold weather carry.  These come in Charcoal, Olive, Brown and Navy blue.

Tactical Pants with an edge

Tactical Pants

In the the last decade, probale since Sept 11th, the reorganization of military personal into smaller non-uniformed security and special ops has created a new industry.    The market has exploded with various new companies emerging.   We’ve also seen a few companies fizzle out, recently SigTac has shown that it is on the way out.    The Eotac Clothing has been on the market for almost a year now and the Eotac pants, both lightweight Style 201, and Style 203 are far superior in durability compared to other lightweight pant designs.  The Style 202 Eotac pants which may look like something that 5.11 has out, have very practical improvements in pocket reinforcements and size.   The side cargo pockets are bellowed which mags it easier to use for things like mag dumps.    The rear ID pocket it much easier to access compared to the simliarly designed Woolrich Elite 4429 pant.

Tactical Pants isn’t a very descriptive if you know the market.   Some people thinkg BDUs are tactical pants and guess what, they are.   Jeans with a zipper on the side pockets can be tactical depending on who you talk to.    Well, for those that need to carry gear, we don’t really care what you call them, if they work for you then you keep buying them.   The sad thing about the tactial clothing and pants market is the QC or quality control.   I’ve seen a lot of people wearing 5.11 pants to the range, but after 5.11 basically owned the tactical apparel market, from the last time I saw, there quality control has gotten shotty.  They make some good stuff, but when there manufacturing facilities are in 3 different Countries, you might get 3 different fits and sizes.

New Tactical Clothing for women

Eotac ClothingThe Style 702 womens operator grade lightweight pants will be made of the same 100% cotton ripstop material that the men’s pants are made of, the stitching and durability are the same, but the buck stops there, or should we say doe?   The pocket designs are unique to the womens pants and nothing like anything Eotac has out.   The front pockets will easily accomodate pocket holsters, the two additional wallet type pockets can hold ID or even something as large as a pistol magazine. The pant legs are slightly tapered for a better look while still allowing access to an ankle holster or being worn with boots.  These pants will be available in late Winter and will come in Black, Khaki, Navy blue and OD Green.

When some people here that there are tactical pants for women, people think the Hello Kitty pink camo pants are what they’re talking about.   If your girlfriend is wearing something like this it’s  not to offend you or put her down, but the sad reality is there are an awful lot of women out there that are wearing ments pants that were designed for men.    The new evolution of warfare involving non uniformed clothing, the tactical apparel market has been exploding.    The tactical apparel company Eotac which successful infilltrated the market with it’s (mostly applicable to men) apparel is now trying to cut into the market with Eotac clothing for women.

Tactical Apparel

Woolrich Elite Shirts

This shirt design has become a popular uniform for those not looking to wear BDUs while in the field.  They and shirts designed similiarly are extremely popular with those working security details in Iraq and Afghanistan and even down in South America.    Each shirt is available in sizes S-3X, and colors choices of Black, Khaki, Sage, and Navy Blue.

Woolrich Elite Shirts have been on the tactical apparel market and are some of the finest quality clothing.   The Style 4901 and Style 4902 shirts you will have a 3 piece ventilated back for keeping the body cool with a more durable shirt design for those working in the security or law enforcement.   The style 4901 is the short sleeve shirt and style 4902 long sleeve.   Both shirts have identical pocket designs and each has a left side pen pocket.   It often amazes me at how many people inquire about having pockets that securely hold a pen.

Concealed Carry Instructor shirt

Tactical ShirtsThe Eotac zip up shirt is also very popular amongst firearm instructors because the back  is  mesh lined vented bi-swing which provides you with freedom of movement and maximum air flow.   Many of our customers that work on the training courses like the ability to zip it down just because it gets hot.  The front left pocket has a pen pocket as well as the left shoulder sleeve.  On the long sleeve 402 version you can roll up and button the sleeves is it is warming up on you.  If you are a firearm instructor this is the shirt you should have in your closet.

We know that many companies out there refer to everything as concealed carry or tactical, but most of us that work in the industry can spot a gun owner about 90% of the time if we see a clip on knife in a pocket, keeps adjusting their belt, wearing 5.11 type pants ect.      The company known as EOTAC has put some inovative apparel on the market and one of my favorite shirts to this day is the 401 short sleeve shirt.   Due to the false buttons and zip up shirt, you can literally wear a should holster under this shirt and still be able to retrieve your weapon with a quick zip down of the shirt.   The 402 Eotac shirt is the long sleeve version.  Both tactical shirts will work in moderate temperatures and we’ve found this shirt to be an excellent option for deep cover concealement especially in the winter.

201 Tactical Pants Review

Tactical PantsWoolrich entered the tactical apparel market several years ago, as well as Blackhawk gear, Proper and Tru-spec.   Most of these clothing companies have good aspects, but recently we’ve seen another Tactical apparel company making very well designed clothing.  Eotac is the short version of the Elite Operator Tactical clothing line.  Their tactical clothing line has been on the market for barely a year, and some products only a few months, but the design and durability seem to be putting them in the heavy hitter category.  The 201 Operator Grade Pants have the best designed ACU tactical pant on the market.

5.11 Tactical has long been the market leader for tactical apparel and clothing.   Ever since Sept 11th and the beginning of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan the demand for non-military style clothing has increased.   Deployments in these regions includes and enormous number of security forces from private companies.   Since the early part of the decade we have seen the emergence of several tactical pants and tactical clothing.  We’ve also seen a few fizzle and fade away.

All critical seams are double-needle stitched and bar-tacked at stress points. The Action Waist has side elastic panels for freedom of movement and easily accommodates an inside the waistband holster.  The leg pocket designs are better designed than some of the other variants on the market.   The matching leg strap is a big issue for those concerned about having contrast in clothing out on the field.  While opinions about fit and finish are always subjective, the pocket designs on the Eotac Tactical Pants are are well thought out.   Having the ability to load 6 AR15 or M16 30rd magazines into your pants and still have the ability to move about without any restriction is impressive.  The 100% ripstop design makes this almost unneccesary to worry about some fancy tactical vest which those in warm climates can appreciate.

New Line of Tactical Apparel

tactical apparelA few years ago Woolrich Elite launched their line of tactical apparel with the help of Backyard Outfitter, but after an internal squabble Fernando Coelho split off from the company and launched his own tactical apparel line named Eotac.   I noticed a few  people mention that most of the Eotac apparel looks like Phase II of the Woolrich Elite line, but there have been some major innovations.  We’ve seen some of the new products coming out in 2010 and there seems to be some pretty aggressive steps in the tactical apparel and concealed carry market with the new Eotac line.

Many of you may have noticed that the tactical apparel market has exploded.   There are already a few casualties on the market, notable Sigtac.    There are a few good apparel lines on the market, but there have already been a few failed attempts at gaining on 5.11 tactical.   5.11 apparel in made in atleast 3 different Countries and the quality control has become pretty inconsistant.   I was on the firing line a few weeks ago and heard guys complaining that they use to where Royal Robbins religiously, but ever since 5.11 took them over, the QC has gotten shotty.
