Hobbies, accessories and reasons

Tactical GearThere area a lot of good upgrades one can do to a firearm, a fighting rifle should be customized to fit an operator.  Advanced Technology makes some quick and easy upgrades for your shotgun or carbine that can give you better grip or balance.  Shotgun shell holders on the buttstock or riding side saddle is a practical tactical upgrade you can do on your remington 870.  The fiberforce stock for the MAK90 is a way to legally get around some firearm bans and are a big step up compared to the stupid thumbhole stocks.    Attach a rifle sling that fits yoru purpose from Blue Force Gear, they come in 1 point, 2 point and 3 point attachements. Minor firearm modifications make need to be done to attache rifle slings, but do some research on various rifle sling configurations to see what works for you.

We’ve all seen the massive accessorizing of firearms in recent years.   Firearms likes SKS rifle and Mini 14s are not immune to the firearm attachements and modifications that have run rampant in the AR15 community.   In my opinion, there are a lot of firearm owners out there that had their Legos taken away from them and they brought that mindset into gun accessorizing and tactical gear stockpiling.    That’s about as harsh as I can be about why people do what they do to their firearms, but some of it is for hobbie reasons, some for practical reasons, and some because people have the obsessive compulsive behavior of needing to spend money.

More bang for the buck

Smith & Wesson 5.45 UppersWe’re still waiting to get feedback from our operators to see how well this upper holds up over time.   I don’t believe they’ve been on the market long enough to get combat worthy reports yet, but we shall see.  There seems to be a dry spell on finding a good AK in 5.45×39 and the AR15 Upper may be your best option.  The Upper comes in an flat top configuration and will be a great secondary or primary weapon to keep around.

The S&W 5.45×39 is probable the most financially useful upper you can get.   There are pistol caliber uppers you can get that are also not very expensive, but the 5.45×39 rifle ballistics are far superior in energy and lack of over-penetration compared to pistol caliber variants.  Smith & Wesson 5.45 Upper Most of the 5.45×39 may not be using this gun for home defense, but it is something to think about and there is absolutely nothing wrong with using this caliber for home defense.   The Smith & Wesson 5.45×39 upper comes with 1-30rd mag Item # SW812005

Ranch Rifles and Ranch Rifle Optics

Bushnell Rifle ScopesI’ve spent enough time on the internet gun boards to hear all of the squabbling about the Mini 14 Ranch rifles.   The short answer on Mini 14 accuracy is this, they are good for what they were originally intended to be used for, and that was to be used for “a few quick shots”.   The Mini 14 Ranch rifle is highly recommended for those in Coyote Country or for varmint hunting.   They are light and can easily accomodate 30-40mm rifle optics.   While we are aware that the .223 has long range capablilities, I highly recommend something in the 3-9×40 power.   You can the wider objective and some amount of magnification.
Bushnell rifle scopes options can vary from 1.5-4.5×32 to 4.5-30x50mm.   The smaller the objective the darker your view will be, but we also acknowlege that you pay for what you get.   Bushnell optics have been around for a long time and are defanitely rugged enough for most hunting and target shooting purposes.

History of Ruger

rugerSturm, Ruger & Company was founded by William B. Ruger and Alexander McCormick Sturm in 1949 in a small rented machine shop in Southport, Connecticut. Just prior to their partnership, Bill Ruger had successfully duplicated two Baby Nambu pistols in his garage, from a captured Nambu that he acquired from a returning US Marine, at the close of WWII. Although deciding against marketing the Nambu pistols, he incorporated the Nambu’s rear style cocking device and a modified Nambu’s silhouette into their first commercially produced .22 caliber pistol, which became so successful that it launched the entire company. Ruger firearms are the nation’s fourth largest firearms manufacturer, and the only one producing firearms in all four market segments: rifles, shotguns, pistols, and revolvers.

Ruger is a dominant player in the .22 rimfire rifle market in the U.S. with its Ruger 10/22. The 10/22 is popular due to being relatively inexpensive and of good quality as well as the wealth of aftermarket accessories and parts available for it. In fact, it’s possible to build a 10/22 using only aftermarket parts, several of which are marketed to target shooters at prices starting at approximately $1000.

Ruger similarly dominates the .22 rimfire semiauto pistol market with the Ruger MK II and Ruger MK III. Like the 10/22, the MkII is extremely well supported with a variety of good aftermarket accessories.  The Ruger pistols are amongst the most popular.

Ruger Casting has plants in Newport, New Hampshire and Prescott, Arizona, making ferrous, ductile iron and commercial titanium castings. Ruger Golf makes steel and titanium castings for golf clubs made by a number of different brands.

Sturm, Ruger stock has been publicly traded since 1969, and became a New York Stock Exchange company in 1990.  After Alex Sturm’s death in 1951. William B. Ruger continued to direct the company until his death in 2002.

From 1949 through 2004, Ruger manufactured over 20 million firearms, and currently offers Ruger magazine and gun models for hunting, target shooting, self-defense, collecting, and law enforcement.

Training and preparedness

Tactical gun casesTactical gun cases are rarely used to their fullest.  After witnessing a lot of shooting events, I’d have to say that disorganization seems to be pretty common amongst most gun owners.  I’ve seen guys show up  with wrong magazines, no backup batteries, no screw drivers, no tools for fixing scopes and countless other goofy stuff.   There have been a few times where I was impressed at how well guys or gals organized there gear in one range bag.

The truth of the matter is only you know what your firearm needs to keep it up and running and what to repair it with, I’m not talking about stockpiling tons of ammo and tools boxes in  your rifle case, but you really should check out some of the tactical rifle cases that are out there.   Uncle Mikes, Bulldog and tacforce all make tactical cases, but their other other usefull pockets other than the standard 30rd magazine pockets.   If you’re going to pick up a gun case, you really should think about marking it with something so you know which gun is in there.   Keep a small multi purpose screw driver in there, allen keys, maybe something to carry batteries for your flashlight or Eotech optics, and you may seriously think about keeping your sight in tools there.  There are various types of tactical rifles cases, some are much close to sniper drag bags than something you can carry like a briefcase, but it may save you some headaches if you are always prepared.

Got kids? Lock your stuff up!

GunVault Gun SafesThere has been a major shift in the attitudes of a lot of gun owners.   I remember the days when gun owners would never want to have to think about locking their handgun in a safe, especially if it was their bedside pistol.    Back in the day, we all had Grandfathers that kept guns laying around, but the stats show that accidents happen and kids will find them if they are not locked up.   If you don’t have kids around this is a none issue, but if you do, you may want to do some thinking.

What happened that changed peoples attitude about locking guns up?   Well, technology has caught up with the reasoning for having quick access to a handgun.   Years ago a gun safe meant using a key or combination to open and that can be cumbersome and slow if you really had to get to your gun at 3am.    GunVault gun safes have been through a few updgrades in the last few years and the safes they are putting out now are much better than the ones they had a few years ago.   The Key pad buttions are easier to feel and like all things,  a little practice time and your hands will do what they need to without thinking.   There is also a biometric version that can read your fingerprints which elimates the possibility of a kid gaining access to your guns.  The GVB200 will open up at soon as you place your hand on the sensor.

Winter Options

Tactical ApparelYou’ve heard that word before, but this time we actually have something that is tactical, useful, warm and makes concealed carry easier in the winter months.   There are plenty of half-zip sweatshirts out there, you see them at Cabela’s or your local outdoor sporting goods store, but all of them make carrying a little more difficult in cold weather.   Wearing slightly over-sized T-Shirts make carrying easier, but after putting on more than 2 layers of clothing, carrying IWB or OWB becomes dangerously cumbersome.
The Eotac Style 501 Half-Zip sweatshirt gives an operator another tactical apparel option.  The 14 oz. 80% cotton / 20% polyester, preshrunk and washed sweatshirt looks and feels like a normal sweatshirt, but the sides of the shirt has break open flaps that make drawing your firearm easier, or just reaching for your cell phone for that matter.   Most never liked the idea of carrying a firearm outside of their body  in a jacket or vest.   I really like this item.   With a nice base layer over a T-Shirt,  then 1 of these 501 Sweatshirts, and you’re good to go for most Cold weather carry.  These come in Charcoal, Olive, Brown and Navy blue.

Upgrades and Doodads

Tactical GearIn the early 1990s there was a surplus of military style rifles coming into the Country.   There were goofy thumbhole stocks to avoid violating gun laws or cheap parts for kits.   Many of these rifles had pretty ugle stocks especially many of the rifles coming in from China or Egypt.   If you have one of those MAK90s or Maadis that works great, but looks like crap, you might want to upgrade your stock with a synthetic.   Many of these stocks are made in the US and can be considered US Parts to add to your legal alterations of your gun.

One of the best and easiest upgrades for any of your Chinese or Russian guns is a Fiberforce stock for your SKS.  The SKS is one of the better balanced guns that the Soviet Bloc states put out and the Fiberforce stock won’t offset that.  There is even a folding stock version that might help you if you want this as a truck gun or want to save some room in your safe.    For AR15 accessories, you can go nuts on AR15 upgrades, but think about what you really want on your gun before you just start buying, try handling your buddies guns before you just order pistol grips that you don’t really know much about or how they really feel.  Everyones hand is different and not all grips will work for you.  You can mess up the balance of your gun if you throw a heavy rail on it, especially if you don’t really need much tactical gear on your gun, why do it.

Upgrade from your army surplus gear holster

Gun holsters
As SWAT Teams have changed their gear, so have the holsters they use for sidearms.   Something like a leg holster for Police or LEOs were not very common since Sheriffs stopped riding horses and started to drive cars.   Now  you’ll be lucky to find a SWAT Team where leg holsters aren’t being used.  If you’ve got to tote an M4 around there really isn’t a good way avoiding snagging or arm movements if you’ve got a paddle holster or OWB holster on.   Galco Holsters,  Blackhawk and Safariland are by far some of the more popular brands with a diverse product line for concealement and tactical purposes.

Like people, gun holsters come in all shapes and sizes.    Holsters can be made out of nylon or they can be made out of kydex.   Years ago there were not as many options other than the military style holter or thumbreak holsters.    Most gun holsters were made out of leather and the balance between protecting a firearm and making it easy to draw from was pretty bad.    Most holsters were meant for LEO or Military personal, but not for concealment.    Pocket guns have been around for hundreds of years, but every since the semi-auto pocket guns came on the market, worrying about lint build up and avoiding gun printing was problematic.
