I have to admit it, I am a Mini 14 enthusiast. The Mini 14 has served me well and I always respected and understood the design limitations. The more I involve myself with the shooting world, the more I just sit back and observe gun owners and watch their skills with the firearms they choose to use. Gunboard squabble will never end when it comes to one gun over the other, but there is nothing wrong with modifying a less expensive semi-auto gun and using it as a defensive weapon.
There have been several ballistics tests showing that a fragmenting 223 round will penetrate less than many of the handgun bullet designs. Once people realize that when they send a round out of their gun inside their home, that bullet may not end after it strikes it’s target and it may penetrate even further if it misses. The idea of using a Mini 14 or M4 type rifle over a shotgun or handgun is actually a very responsible and intelligent thing to do. I would also suggest that a less trained user will probable use a light carbine more effectively than a shotgun or handgun. This military style jacket is designed for modern flashlights and single or double stack mags. When we need to do a lot of heavy lifting, I don’t like loading my belt up with a belt that looks like Batmans utility belt. The pocket designs are very well made and the snap buttons on the pocket are what puts it in a A+ category for tactical gear. When you hear the click of the buttons you don’t have to worry about watching your 15rd doubel stack 9mm mags flying out of the pockets while your doing physical work. This jacket is defanitely not as heavy looking as it is in some of hte pictures and can easily become a Winter jacket by wearing a good base layer under it.
Most of us probable got into the shooting world via a shotgun or 22lr rifle. Those seem to be some of the best instroductory firearms. You can learn the basics about shooting from a 22lr bolt action rifle and the shotgun is the most versatile firearm out there. Something like a Remingto 870 shotgun is normally available with an 18-28 barrel on it and can be found in 12 or 20 gauge. The shotgun can be used for pheasant hunting all the way up to deer just by altering the type of shot or using a slug. Depending on the sights you have on the gun, you may want to consider rifle sights if you plan on using slugs very often.
There are multiple ways of carrying a firearm concealed. Each of them may be good for a certain environment, but one way may not work for all situations. Sometimes people get too caught up in one manor of concealment and the reality is that we should probable consider atleast 2 or 3 ways of concealing the same firearm. When I was at a Defensive Pistol course a few years ago, we were asked to bring a concealment garment to practice drawing our firearm. The majority of us didn’t show up with pocket pistols for the Class and having something that would work for a full size auto was difficult.
Back in the 1990s there was a lot of Eastern Com-Block guns coming into the Country. There were also a lot of MAK90s and SKS Rifles coming in from China. Not sure why there were so many Chinese guns coming in, but there must have been some house cleaning from the Militarys over there. You may be able to find a well made 7.62×39 rifle being made in the USA now, but they are pretty expensive and will cost you about the same as a new AR15 or more. Some of the nicest AKs are being by Arsenal Arms and they look and shoot great.
When it’s that hot out that your risking dehydration, you seriously need to consider the type of clothing you are wearing. Those wearing body armor or carrying more gear than the usually CCW gun owner need as many pockets as possible. Trading your tactical pants in for tactical shorts that have almost the same pocket designs is hard to find. There is also a very diverse opinion on the inseams of the shorts that people wear and there’s no real in between.
I’ve heard that line asked about 5 times a month. You have to realize the number of people that carry guns in our society vs. the number that don’t. I’d say that in most cases, 98% of people in our society aren’t looking to spot a CCW holder and won’t suspect that are unless that are sloppy at concealing it. I highly recommend that most gun carries consider atleast 3 ways of carrying a firearm concealed. In most parts of the Country people have to consider a warm weather and cold weather method, then there is always a reason to consider what method one could carry a full size auto.
Ammo prices seem to be coming down just like the economy is going down so now might be a better time to consider going out and scoping the place out for ammo. Ammo prices are still drastically different, but atleast the availability seems to be there. I notice the run on firearms has slowed now, probable since everyone knows that if you don’t already have enough, racking up more credit card debt just for rack queen isn’t rational. When a CCW carrier is carrying a firearm in the winter, we can understand why they may want a firearm in a pocket outside of their body, but I recommend putting some thought into how you wear your clothing and how a firearm can be reached in when wearing heavy clothing. Jackets that hold firearms will have to come off if you’re in a house or building that gets hot, so then what do you do with your gun? The Eotac Style 102 CCW Vest is cut very long and is great for concealing in warm weather, but not a firearm retention vest.
There are always multiple ways of carrying a concealed firearm. If you can really carry a full size auto all day and feel comfortable that good for you, but there are environments that many of us will get in where concealing a firearm is difficult. Keep in mind that not everyone of us is carrying a gun in an environment where we’re dealing with friendlies. There are plenty of places we can carry where a woman may bump into us and know she hit a Sig Sauer 9mm, but in other places you’ll get, “what is that, are you carrying a gun?”
