Methods and uses for holsters

Bulldog HolstersSometimes people think that a holster is only a term that applies to a firearm.   The more you carry tactical gear like knives, flashlights ect. the more you’ll realize that you may want a  holster that works for those, too.    Another thing to think about is what kind of magazine  holsters to use.   I’ve seen lots of gun mags fly out of mag holders because they were not appropriate for the task.   Some magazine holsters are nice for IDPA or competition shooting, but sit on a reclining chair on a hot summer day and you’ll notice your mags are on the chair and not in the mag.   I’ve seen this happen to friends that were sitting in the seat next to me on the long car ride home, they lean back in the chair and the mags are falling out.

Bulldog Holsters are also making shotgun shell holders which are a must for all shotgun owners.   I still get laughs from some of my friends that think i’m trying to pull a Chewbacca impersonation by using Bulldog holsters that are holders like that, but it really makes sense if you have a pump shotgun.    The bulldog ankle holster is a slightly different style than the Uncle Mikes holster design and not much different in price.  This is something that would fall into the deep concealment category, but it is really either this or pocket carry for most white collar or social environments where there may be a lot of contact.

Target Shooting and Defensive ammo

AR15 Upper ReceiverThe caliber wars are never ending, but once spin to the argument that in my opinion is not much of an argument anymore, is that bullet designs are becoming more and more effective.    When you read about the 9mm vs 45acp debates people argue about the size of the bullet, over penetration and stopping power.   The reality is that hunting bullets and defensive ammo has taken a step, maybe not a giant step, but a considerable step forward in increasing a calibers effectiveness.

I was watching a instructional video where the instructor showed bullet penetration differences between a 38 special, shotgun with bird shot, buckshot, a 9mm handgun and an AR15.    Most novice shooters would think the rifle was the biggest penetrator and the reality was it was not.    It now depends on the bullet design and not the caliber.   A fragmenting .223 bullet will transfer energy much easier to soft targets and violently fragment and not over penetrate.   Something as mild as a 38 special with a FMJ can pass through an urban home much easier.   Your AR15 may be a better option as a defensive weapon if you select the right ammo.   If you own a 20inch barrel variant you may want to consider swapping out your AR15 Upper Receiver for something a little shorter just so manuevering inside your  home is easier, but it hands down far better than a  handgun for most defensive purposes.

Fixen up the AK

Tapco AccessoriesI think many of us have seen wild variations in quality of the Kalashnikov firearms.   Back in the early 1990s there were very inexpensive guns coming in from Eastern Europe.  The quality of many of these guns were pretty darn good.    As the years went by, the guns got worse and worse and I started to see my fair share of AK style weapons that did not live up to the AK47s reputation of reliability.   There were a few importers that were assembling guns that looked bad, but they worked very well.   Some rifle sights were misaligned but other than that, it was really all about the rifle stocks.

If you are interested in learning how to modify one of your Ak rifles.   A good starting point of figuring out what you can do and modify on your gun is to start with Tapco accessories.  If you are working on a stamped receiver, I suggest looking into the Tapco side folder, fixed stock or the T6 adjustable stock.   The M4 Carbine will always have an edge over the 7.62×39 style for speed, but you can make your AK style weapon into a BETTER CQB gun.   The pistol grip on the AK is also an easy change that will improve your hold on your firearm.  The AK family of rifles were mostly designed for shorter operators and for users wearing gloves and heavy jackets.  You should be able to modify your gun to be more comfortable and closer to you LOP if you feel the AK is too short for you.

Tactical Stocks for the Ruger 10/22

Advanced Technology StocksI must admit that I wasn’t into the idea of needing a semi-auto 22LR.   The 22lr isn’t an effective defensive round and really mostly a plinking and training round.    A bolt action with iron sights is still the best configuration for learning how to shoot.  It teaches aiming and trigger control, but i think the Ruger 10/22 is still a fun gun to shoot with.   There seems to a lot of big kids that like to shoot the 10/22 and there’s nothing wrong with a kid shooting them.   I have a friend that put a heavy barrel on his and it’s a tac driver.

Advanced Technology Stocks are an inexpensive modification that is an easy upgrade to Carbines, semi-autos and hunting rifles.   The Fibeforce stock will give you a different feel than the standard Sturm Ruger 10/22 wood stock.   These stocks are easy drop in modifications that can be done in secondes.   The thumbhole stockwill give you a better cheek weld and may be an easy fix for a big kid to get a better grip on this little rifle.   Stock #ADVRUG3000 can be purchased at Rogue Elite.net

Reasons for change

VLTOR Rifle StocksIt’s hard to know if a configuration is best for you.   I recently got a phone call from a shooter that sounded like he was new to the AR15 family.   He was asking about which rifle stock configuration was best and then I asked him what his LOP or length of pull was and he had no idea.    The reasons for adjustable stocks is because each operator issued a Carbine has a different arm length.   I’ve  punched myself in the nose with rifles and shotguns that were too short for me and modified several of my M1A rifles to fit my comfort.   There are also other reasons for having stock modifications.   If you are wearing a heavy winter coat or body armor you will want to shorten your stock.    Next time  you are at a gun shop or a shooting range, ask other shooters if you can hold there gun and see how it feels.  Check the gun stock manufacturer and do some research.

There are different levels of weaponry and modifications depending on the deployment.   Vltor rifle stocks were designed for Marine Corps and Special forces.   The design of the updgrades to your AR15 are for improved ergonomics and for increase storage capabilities.   The notion of storing gun parts or batteries on your firearms  is debateable, but there are plenty of people that like this reasoning.   The VLTOR rifle stocks also have a cheekweld and buttstock design that will increase your lock on to target.

When the gunsafe gets tight

Advanced Technology StocksYou might want to think about collapseable stocks or folding stocks.   Guns can take up a lot of space depending on the optics and accessories you put on them.    I’ve seen plenty of my friends go from 12 or 18 rifle safes to full size gun safes just because of the optics they had on rifles.   One thing they never advertise when you are shopping for a gun safe is what kind of rifles it will hold.  Cramming your guns in will only cause damage and make getting guns in and out a headache.   Instead of worrying about having to find a new gun safe, you might want to think about spending a few hundred bucks on changing the stocks of your military style weapons to something that can fold or collapse.

The M4 Carbine rifle is not only a fast and effective CQB weapon, but a very easy to manuever carbine inside a vehicle.   You can easily gain 30% more room in a gun safe by mounting guns on the wall of the safe if you can fit them and you probable will.  I’ve seen friends mount short carbines on the inside door of a safe just because they could.  If properly mounted, an AK with an Advanced Technology Stock side folder will probable mount right on the door and you may even be able to two if you can mount it properly.

Packed and ready

Bulldog Rifle CasesSoft cases are usually made of nylon and many of the assault cases are designed similiarly.   Assault rifle cases are very practical because they hold and organize your magazines.   I highly recommend marking the case for a specific rifle just so you don’t get your semi-autos gun magazines mixed up.   If you don’t need something like an assault rifle case, then and easy think to do is just a zip up soft case or gun sock.    You may want to look into a range bag which can hold staplers or even handguns and magazines as well as ammo.

Today might be the day that you were out at the range and you realized that you forgot your sight in tools, or you forgot to bring enough magazines, or worse, you forgot your rifle mags or you brought the wrong ones.   Bulldog rifle cases are very well made and won’t burn a hole in your pocket.   Serious gear needs serious organization and that doesn’t mean we need to have an SKB hardcase for our rifles.   I would suggest that if you have a rifle that costs over $3000 and that is including the optics then you may want a hard case, but let’s be practical.   We need to transport our guns WITH the gear we need and not have to add much weight.

Complete your CQB Skills with an M4 Upper

AR15 UppersI was never the one that was into the tactical doodad thing when I got into shooting AR15 rifles.   My idea of a rifle is a 30/30 or a M1 or FAL rifle.   I understood the ballistics of the .223 round and knew what is was good for and always thought that I should stick with the 20 inch heavy barrel for the best terminal ballistics.   Well, then I actually started learning about close combat and understood that toting the longest barrel gun and the heaviest barrel is going to mean slower speed and too much weight.

The M4 is hands down the best close quarters combat Carbine.   I have trouble referring to the M4 as a rifle, but I think that it really isn’t.   The beauty of the AR15 family or rifles is the easy swap in swap out changes you can do with an AR15 Upper.   AR15 Uppers are made by dozens and dozens of manufacturers and the quality and design differences are very diverse.   LWRC is making what I believe is the best M4 style carbine for US Citizens, but CMMG, Bushmaster, DPMS are making less expensive yet combat worthy AR15 Uppers.   Understand what the M4 is designed for and using the proper ammunition will put you in a much better position that using a handgun for those environments.

Frequently asked questions

tactical shirtsWe get a lot of customers asking us about the new Eotac line of clothing.   It’s no secret that the people behind Eotac were originally behind Woolrich Elite Series tactical clothing.    Many of the products that first came out were very close to the Woolrich Elite products that have been out for several years and were also variations of what 5.11 Tactical has been selling.   There are some differences that you will notices as soon as you put on the clothes and recently I had a phone conversation with a customer that mentioned he needed something that gave him more mobility that 5.11 pants.

Eotac is backed by the Corporation that owns Bushmaster, Remington, DPMS, Marlin Firearms as well as many other companies.   This puts Eotac into some serious competition with 5.11 products just based on who is backing them up.  According to our customers, many of the Eotac pants have pocket desings that are better thought out.   The Warranty on Eotac apparel basically guarantees quality and they’ll send you a new pair out if there is a defect.   Put that up against 5.11 Tactical deteriorating quality control and reputation and you’ll appreciate spending money on tactical shirts, tactical pants and other apparel that has insurance on the money you spent.
