Here we go again with magazine capacities

I really would be surprised to see another AWB like 1994 get passed because it looks more and more like the Obama Administration is going to over reach on the issue and  just piss everyone off.   We have a large number of Police Departments that are shaking their heads at the Politicians because it’s really all about grand standing and showing face.   If you look at the rate of fire that an AR15 has, 10rd magazines can shoot very fast and can do very little to make the firearm less deadly.   This whole argument is like saying that, to reduce speeding people need to drive on gas tanks a few gallons smaller.  If you look at the way this shooting occured in CT, none of the laws that are being pushed would have had an impact on what happened.

It’s so sad watching the stories play out in CT and on the News in Washington DC while we sit here and watch all of the murders in Philadelphia not make national news.  Now they are demonizing Glock magazines that hold anything over 10rds and every news story is about crime involving drugs or the same mentally unstable shooter in Goth makeup.   Standard capacity magazines have existed for the AR15 for over 60yrs and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons have advanced and can kill more people.   Private ownership of firearms is about personal safety and preventing tyranny.

Caliber changes or gun changes? .380 vs sub-compact 9mm

I’ve never been a big fan of small guns because from my experience the smaller the gun the snappy or nastier the recoil.   I’m  not sure of the model but one of the first guns I shot that I really did not like was a 32ACP handgun.   The gun hurt the palm of my hand and after about 50rds I knew that I never wanted a gun like that.  I believe it was a kel-tec pistol but I’m not sure of the model.   I’ve shot 44magnums and plenty of .357 in the past but those were guns that If they fit your hand, the blast and concussion was more of an issue than my hands stinging.  There are plenty of options to adjust grips, but if the gun is already so small, why would you want to make it bigger?

Several years ago I settled for the Sig 239 because it was the only small 9mm that I could trust that was rugged, and would not be uncomfortable to shoot.   I’ve been messing around  a friends Kahr PM9 and several Kahr Magazines that he let me borrow and I put in some range time.  This gun is borderline as far my personal tolerance because if I don’t find a gun fun to shoot I don’t want to own it.  For someone over 6ft tall I don’t need to carry the smallest caliber or the smaller firearm to CCW.  If size is an issue but you don’t want a 32acp or a .380, I would say that the Kahr PM9 is a really 9mm for it’s size.

What is our best selling, least complained about 1911 magazine?

The best selling 1911 magazine is hands down the Wilson Combat 1911 magazines.   We couldn’t narrow it down to just one magazine because there are several different types of magazine bases that competition shooters  might want something that a CCW owner doesn’t want or need.  The Wilson 47D is our most popular 8rd 1911 magazine and the #47 is the most popular 7rd, but the Elite Tactical Magazines have gained ground for the competition shooters.   The ETM magazines have a number base plate and the windows are in a different cut than the tradition Wilson magazines.   They are higher priced than the Chip McCormick Magazines which come in as a close 2nd as far as sales.

The thing that many 1911 firearms seem to have trouble with are the magazine follower/hold open tabs.  Many of the GI magazines wear and bend but the one piece Wilson Combat Magazines have a more reliable balance and catch that holds the firearm open when the last round has been fired.  I personally don’t have an issue carrying 45acp ball ammo because when I carry that gun it’s usually when I’m up in the mountains and more likely going to have to use it against and animal than in a highly populated area where over penetration might be an issue.   I have heard rumors that 8rd magazines are not as reliable as the 7rd magazines but I have never witnessed that.

Be careful about about how much screwing around you do with your 1911s

I’ve had many family members and friends ask me to go shopping with them to help them pick up a firearm.  There have been many times that I have warned people about buying a certain gun even though it looked like it was a good price.  Many of the times it was a firearm that had obviously been customized.  The biggest warning sights are usually when the triggers have been changed.   That can mean that somebody was lessening the trigger pull weight and it’s also a hint that it was turned into a target gun and there may be other parts like springs or buffers inside it.   I have a family member that purchased a 1911 because he had one in the military and the one he eye balled at a gun store had exactly these issues.

After we took this firearm to the gun club it actually jammed up on us several times, I tried to take it apart to see what the spring looked like but it had a full length guide rod and I did not have any familiarity with that.   We even tried several of my wilson combat magazines that usually solve many 1911 problems but the gun still hung up.   We later found out that there was a tool we needed and there was in fact a buffer that was decaying inside the gun and causing all of the malfunctions.   There are so many new 1911s out there, Sigs, Les Bauer, Kimber ect. that you have to watch the amount of tinkering people do with them because not all of the 1911 parts and especially holsters are going to work with them.

Magpul Pmags the #1 AR15 magazine

Magpul Pmags are the most durable and reliable AR15 magazine and have extended the life of the direct impingement firearm. Magpul Pmags are available in Black, OD Green, Foliage and Dark Earth. We are a stocking dealer for all Magpul Accessories, gun grips, magazine accessories and gun stocks. Our inventory of Magpul Pmags are also available in 10rd, 20rd and 30rd magazine capacities.

Everyone seems to think that the AR15 always uses 30rd magazines, but for those that have trained, there is something that balances out the M4 Carbine very well by using 20rd round magazines. The Magpul Pmags that we sell are the most reliable AR15 magazines and there is lots of proof if you do your research on the internet or Youtube. Magpul Pmag durability is superb and the AR15 magazines are available in Black, Dark Earth, Foliage and OD Green.  There is a new generation 3 pmag that is coming out very soon.

When you are putting hardball ammo downrange with a 45acp

It better be a 1911 if you ask me.  I have several handguns in my collection but I am really bored with most modern 45acp guns because they are too bulky or just to darn heavy for my tastes.  I’m also not a big fan of short barreled guns or compact 1911s.   They are too much maintenance and the slower cycle action seems to make them more prone to having malfunctions.  If you have to ask me what the next best 45acp handgun is, I’d probable have to say the Sig 220 which is also another single stack gun.   Many 45acp guns like the Springfield XD and Glock 21 are too much bulk for my taste and having to hold that up for any extended period of time will make me want a single stack gun.

Many guns issuing warrants or doing house clearing in Iraq and Afghanistan are using the 1911.   When we get feed back from  our customers it’s almost always Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick magazines that they are using.  Both magazines have a long history of working well in the 1911 and both can be had for under $35 dollars.  I rarely use the 7rd magazines because that extra 8rd magazine barely extends out of my guns and the not quite flush fit doesn’t bother me at all.  Having 8rds of 45acp is something that will get the job done if you look at the stats on which caliber gets the job done, magazine capacity is rarely an issue for police or self defense shootings.

Magazines and Magazines with windows

I learned a very long time ago to be careful what you say when you are in the middle of a fight.  I’m no combat veteran but it was good that I learned my lesson a paintball course and not on the battlefield.  When you are running low on ammunition the last thing you do is announce it in the middle of an engagement.   A long time ago I, along with a friend of mine were in the middle of a paintball engagement and it was the last battle of the day.  We were both running low on paintball ammunition and the odds were against us.  The teams were 14 vs 15 and the two of us had 9 of the 15 players coming towards us.  We both had less than 40rds left and none of our fellow team members were around to back us up.

As we were engaged and almost cornered my friend retreated to my position and yelled “i’m almost out of ammo, I only have about 20 paintballs left” I announced ” I only have 20 paintballs left. Meanwhile It hit me like a ton of bricks that that was the last thing I should have annouced to 75% of the team, after that I learned to keep my mouth shut, but having magpul pmags  with the windows was something I thought about after that day.  Knowing approximately how many rounds of ammuntion you have left before you move forward in an engagement is a good thing.  Under stress it’s real hard to tell if you put 8rds off or 15rds.  Knowing you are half full rather than finding out you made a forward advance with 3rds left in the magazine.

People that are still carrying the 1911 pistol and love it

If you love the way the 1911 feels in your hand you’re probable not going to find another firearm that feels the same way.  I’ve like the traditional 1911 style guns for almost 2 decades and tried out many variations of them, but they didn’t feel like a 1911 when the makers made them a double stack.  There is something about 1911 pistols that is just balanced very well.  Once you put more than about  8rds in a 1911 the gun gets heavy and for something that is so slim and contoured right, you can mess that up with 10rd protruding magazines.  That’s fine for competition shooting but I don’t think you’ll ever see law enforcment or special operations  units running those magazines even if they are reliable.

Most of the Special operations units we deal with actually use 7rd magazines although I have found that the 8rd magazine reliability issues is a myth.  All I run through my 1911 government models are Wilson combat magazines  with the 8rd wilson combat magazines that work so well.   I have been using gun grease on my Colt 1991A1 and my Springfield GI 1911 that had some minor customizations, but I have not seen a malfunction in that firearm in years.  I am still running mostly ball ammo through my guns which is the proven reliable ammunition.  Gun grease is something that I have been using more and more on my handguns because they seem to  hold up better for long term storage.

Not announcing your firearm while trying to take cover

There have been many times that I have been at the range and was downrange changing targets and could look back and see the firearms on the table.  I remember hearing about all of those sniper and counter sniper stories about seeing the flash of a rifle scope and knowing exactly where your opponent was.  It really is that obvisous when you are on the opposite end of a rifle and the sun is behind  you but there are also may modern acccessories that don’t help you keep a low profile.   Trijicon sells the flash kill device for then end of an ACOG and they are very important is sunny places like Iraq.  As soon as you look out the window with your firearm you can announce your presence from hundreds of yards away if you do  not use a flash kill.

Many flashlights also give you away and having a red lense over the end of your light or anything other than the white reflective mirrors can help.  There are other things you can do by even using different color magpul pmags other than Black.   Black magazines can cover you in darkness but in certain urban environments foliage green or flat dark earth might be a better magazine to use.  Mixing up your rifle stock colors or even painting it to match it’s environment can help give you a better chance at using concealment.

Coming this Fall at Rogue Elite

Not only have we finished setting up our new tactical shop here in Broomall, we are getting setup for the Fall outwear promo with TruSpec.  This year Gunny will be releasing his own tactical pant from TruSpec and we were happy to hear that this tactical pants has a gussetted crotch.  This has probable the only consistent complaint we got about the TruSpec pants.  They really are comfortable to wear and the pockets are very unique.  The material designs make it an easy transition from 5.11 tactical pants to the TruSpec design because they are both a polyester cotton blend.  Its hard to find places to try stuff like this on but now we have a location here in Southeaster Pennsylvania.

Tru Spec has a big 2 month long outerwear promotion going on from October 1st to November 30th and it will be a good time to stop in early October to get the best deals and selections.   There aren’t too many places to tryout things like this and Philadelphia Police and Security Supplies doesn’t usually mean that you are selling tactical pants.  Many stores that market that mostly deal with uniforms and the like but we are a full stocking dealer for Tru spec pants, jackets, vests, shorts and jackets.  We are located in the Broomall Industrial Park just right off of 476 South.  We are open Tuesday- Friday 12am-6pm and Saturday’s  10am-5pm.
