Reviews about gun lubrication, Slip 2000 and how things have changed with gun cleaning

Slip 2000 EWLThere are a ton of lubricants out there for firearms that have made major leaps forward from M-Pro7 to Frog Lube to Slip 2000.  I still have ancient remnants of gun cleaning supplies sitting in my reloading room that are probable going to end up in the hands of my grandchildren if I don’t conjure up the courage to thrown them out, but I’ve used Rem Oil and a few other items in those piles to fix door knobs and swivels on cabinets and it seems a waste to just chuck it.   I have however given up on using anything but M-Pro 7 and Slip 2000 on my firearms because I’ve pretty much found what I’ve been looking for.   There are always slight pros and cons between M-Pro 7, Frog Lube and Slip 2000 but I don’t notice the difference.   Chemical engineering and synthetic oils have crossed over from car oils to gun oils and I actually have a few friends that use Mobil 1 on their guns although that does not have the preservatives that Slip 2000 or some of the other weapon lubricants have.

I have used the Slip 2000 EWL on all of my AR15 and also my AK rifles and even after using the rifles for hundreds of rounds the bolt carrier group still looks wet.   Sure if you heat the gun up in a firefight the lube is going to burn off at a higher rate but Slip 2000 EWL has a good reputation from some of our Special Ops customers that in all honesty, was the recommendation for us to carrier the product line.  I am going to work on some of the Copper Removers and see what I notice but I have never really felt the need to have to have this done on the combat rifles I own due to the fact that I never notice any deterioration in the accuracy as of yet.   For handguns and bolt action rifles you can use the Slip 2000 EWL but If  you look at the technical specs on it, it’s probable a bit of an over kill and you best save that for your FAL, AK, Steyr Aug, G3 or other military style rifle.   The Slip 2000 gun lube is probable best for handguns, bolt actions and revolvers.

Not much of a need for gun cleaning rods

ThereHoppes BoresnakesRifle CleaningHandgun CleaningHandgun Cleaning6 are a lot of things that haven’t changed much with shooting firearms, but the way things are cleaned has changed.   Gun Lubricants are mostly non-toxic anymore and they are much better at doing more than keeping a firearm running, they also help do what gun cleaners did and also help protect rifles and handguns from corrosion.   I have gone through a few gun cleaning rods, all 3 piece ones, and it’s always the 22 caliber rifles that do in those devices.   If you put the wrong cleaning patch on the rod you are going to get it stuck halfway in the barrel and might even not be able to pull the rod out.   Not all firearms can be cleaned with a cleaning rod properly, the M1 Garand,  and Mini 14 and Ruger 10/22.   Sure if you want to clean it from the muzzle you can but that’s not the direction the bullet goes and isn’t recommended.

The only firearm that I don’t use a device like this in are my revolvers because I do find that I need a pistol cleaning rod to brush out the cylinder whenever I am shooting all lead bullets because the Hoppes Boresnakes just don’t seem to get it all.   There are always reasons to have more than a few gun cleaning tools around but it’s also important to make sure you use the correct caliber sizes and don’t force it.    I am presently using a 22 Caliber Boresnake on my AR15s, Ruger Mini 14s and Marline Model 882 and Ruger 10/22.   Just soak the top of the snake just ahead of the bristles and drop the cord through the barrel and pull.

Get rid of your old gun cleaning hazzards

gun lubeOtis gun cleaning kitsIt’s bad enough to be around lead for 30yrs but lead is something that’s on it’s way out the door, even the military is destined to be moving beyond it at some point and oAR15 Cleaning kitsgun cleaning suppliesne of the biggest problems gun clubs run into are EPA issues with range clean ups.    Hoppes #9 has been arSlip 2000 Bore CleaningBoresnakeound a long time and has a reputation of working well at cleaning bores, but that stuff is just nasty to be in the room with and liver damage warnings aren’t much of an incentive to keep it around.  I wouldn’t know where Copper removerRifle Cleaningto start from with suggestions on what is best to  use, but anything from Slip 2000, M-Pro7 to Frog Lube have great improvements and almost zero health risks attached to them.   Things like Boresnakes help avoid the need for piles of cleaning patches and can be thrown in the wash machine after several use ages to get back to clean and new shape.

I find pistol cleaning primarily revolver cleaning to still be a little more tedious because cylinder cleaning takes a little more focus and I still use lead reloads for some of the Smith & Wesson revolvers.   The best thing to do to avoid major projects after a range session is to clean your firearms shortly after using them and not let things sit for long.   For many hunting rifles and many handguns, just gun handling can cause rust to eventually form from your finger prints that it’s very important to keep a gun cleaning cloth or rag around to wipe them down and have the right gun cleaning supplies available.   One of my biggest gun rust issues was after a hunting trip where no bullets where fired and the firearms were put away, and 3 months later when they were taken out there was rust along the barrels.   A wipe down before putting it away or using something like Slip 2000 gun lube would have prevented it in the first place.

Sometimes people are “that far behind” in gear

hoppes boresnakes90I’ve been using Hoppes boresnakes for probable more than a decade and never looked back.  I’ve got fragments of about 5 gun cleaning kits that had something good in them but also several things that broke and got tossed away.   Don’t ask me where my 3 piece 22LR gun cleaning rod went because the story isn’t pretty.   Paying attention to the caliber variables with gun cleaning patches is important, and that’s where many mistakes can be made.  If it’s too thick of a patch from being folded over it can get stuck and too small of a patch doesn’t clean properly.   Boresnakes are general very broad for useage and I use the same boresnake for my Marlin Model 882 22Mag that I use for my AR15.

I’ve messed around with Otis gun cleaning kits but the biggest negative I’d say about those are that the parts tend to fall out or move around.  It’s a great portable gun cleaning kit, but Hoppes Boresnakes don’t take up space and you can easily store them in the packaging you purchase them in.   I keep a small bottle of Slip 2000 EWL in my “Go Bag” and my basic gun cleaning supplies, like a cloth to wipe the gun down and a 22 Cal boresnake.   You can get shorter versions of the snag for handguns but I usually fall back on using a pistol cleaning rod.  There are always trade offs with these things and not everyone will use gun cleaning supplies in the exact same way.

It’s about the quality of the ammo you use, not just maintenace of a firearm

gun cleaning suppliesThere are a lot of myths about gun cleaning and one of them is that firearms need to be cleaned after every use.  I remember the times going to gun clubs with friends and some of them would bail out because they didn’t want to shoot on a rainy day and get their guns wet.   That cracks me up becaues 90% of the handguns, rifle and shotguns they own are all used in military style situations and can surely be used out in the field for long periods of times.   One reason composite firearms have an advantage in certain environments is their low maintenance and need for lubrication.    Over cleaning according to many expert firearm instructors can cause more damage than not cleaning it.

When comes to something like an AR15, it’s fact that lubrication has far more to do with proper function that cleaning it all the time.   I have a large cache of gun cleaning supplies and some of them are things I probable should throw away if they weren’t toxic.   I have been a big fan of M-Pro7  gun cleaning supplies although I have yet to test out any of the copper cutters or copper removers from them.  I really think I may  only have 1 gun that can benefit from it and it’s not something I’m really worried about because it’s still an MOA rifle.  There are lots of new cleaning kits and gun lubes for you to consider buying because the new gun oils ect.  really are much safer and better for you.

Tactical gear for yourself or send your spouse for a gift certicate

Philadelphia Police SuppliesIn this industry, it is so technical that it’s very rare for someone  in the Law Enforcement community to send someone in to shop for them.  We get a lot of last minute buyers when someone finds out they got moved to a SWAT Team or recently got hired to be a  Police officer in the Delaware County, Chester County or Philadelphia Police Department.  Usually customers come in in waves, after Graduations at the Philadelphia Police Academy or the Delaware County Police Academy.   Recently we started getting customers from the Montgomery County Police Academy Training Center.   Each week we’ve been setting up 1 or 2 Police Departments for their Clothing Allowances and logistically speaking, the customers are glad we are here in Delaware County so they can walk in and walk out.  Shopping for tactical pants, shirts and body armor is something that people want to do in-store and not online.

Our 1500 sq ft Broomall, Police Depot and tactical store is in the heart of Delaware County in the Broomall Industrial Park.   We are a stocking dealer for many in the region and we are a good source for Philadelphia Police Supplies from tactical boots from the Original Swat Footwear company, Tru-Spec, 5.11 tactical, ATS Tactical,  Streamlight Flashlights like the Stinger and Strion, which are rechargeable flashlights that the vast majority of Upper Darby, Marple Township and even the State Police are using.  We stock many of the handcuff and Safariland products that new Police Officers will need for their duty gear.  CR123 batters are something we need to keep in store at all times because most local places that sell them are 50% more than what we charge.

Major Changes to lubrication and gun grease

gun cleaning suppliesLots of gun owners are starting to realize that they should consider using a form of gun grease on their firearms.  Now that so many people are using .308 rifles the heat and friction rates are much higher than 5.56 guns.    Long term storage and larger mechanical parts means harder banging and clanking around and it’s not just the guys that had the Springfield M1A rifles that still use gun grease.   I have been looking for a good gun grease for a long time ever since my Colt gun grease started running out.  We found out about the Slip 2000 gun grease after becoming a Slip 2000 dealer and I have used it on all of my AR15 recoil springs to smooth out the action and also to get rid of that AR15 gun ping that makes the firearm sound like sometime of BB gun.

With all of the Sig and FN SCAR Rifles becoming more and more popular, it’s not just M1A vs FAL as far as durable and reliable 7.62 MM guns.   I have been cleaning out all of my old gun cleaning supplies and bringing in new stuff.  Frog lube is another lubrication we hear about but it’s really up to the customers what works best for them.  M-Pro7 has greatly improved it’s product line and we are moving further away from the old Hoppes #9 that probable 90% of gun owners have used in the past.  The best thing about many of these lubricants is they are also as good with rifles as they are with handguns.  The gun grease are not sticky and thick like they use to be.

It is time to upgrade your gun cleaning supplies

Not everyone owns the same type of rifles as I do but whether you are a gun owner that owns lever action rifles or bolt action rifles, or you have a couple AR15 rifles, gun cleaning has changed for the better and you might want to consider disposing some of the products you have in your house just for your own health.  Gun cleaning lube like Slip 2000 and the new M-Pro7 are much more effective than CLP and they do not have any of the toxicity that CLP had.   I find it difficult to clean firearms with gloves on so I usually just avoid getting too much contact with solvents and then just wash my hands.  Well, after 20yrs of being around Hoppes #9 I think it’s time to move on and use something less dangerous for the next 20yrs.

I have boresnakes and single piece gun rods to clean most of my bolt action and semi-autos, but now that I have been using Slip 2000 I have used up all of my Break free CLP and moved on.   If you are interested in getting new gun cleaning supplies look into the Slip 2000 product line and you’ll have access to the Slip 2000 gun lube and for semi-autos the Extreme Weapons Lube is a primary on all of my AK rifles and my SKS rifles as well as my Bushmaster, LWRC and Spikes Tactical AR15 rifles.   I have not tried out all of the copper removers from SLIP 2000 or M-Pro7 but I have sent out a few tests to local police departments that have never even  heard of Slip 2000 but when I referenced that our Navy Seals are using it, they started to listen.

Customizing cleaning kits to your firearms

Otis gun cleaning kitsI have purchased probable close to 5 types of cleaning kits in my lifetime and I believe I have all of the parts minus one cleaning rod, and possible a few brushes.   I have learned that certain cleaning kits are better for certain firearms and others are mostly for traveling.  The clean kit i use the most is probable the Otis 556 cleaning kit but I still resort to a one piece cleaning rod.   Boresnakes are very usefull but they are caliber specific and with the Otis gun cleaning system you can basically have a multi caliber gun cleaning cord.   The only negative I find with the Otis kits is sometimes the parts fall out of the foam and you will have too many parts if you buy too many kits.  It’s best to learn the pros and cons of a system like this because you may want to consider getting the larger universal cleaning system.

When it comes to gun lubrication, I’m not sure if Otis is going to come out with a green cleaning system like M-Pro7 or Slip 2000.   I still  use several lubes and gun grease but the Otis gun cleaning kits are still in wide use in my gun collection.   I find this system to be excellent for the AR15 rifles as well as 22 caliber guns like my Ruger 10/22 and my Marlin 882 22magnum.   I still prefer a cleaning rod for bolt actions and my DS FAL rifle.   I personally have not noticed any difference in how well the items clean, but I do notice differences in the time it takes to actually clean a firearm.  Every firearm disassembles differently and I choose the gun cleaning system accordingly.

Otis gun cleaning kits, what’s the reason for a kit like this?

otis gun cleaning kitsI started out with a 22 Caliber Hoppes 3 piece gun rod and it did me well for many years.  That smell of Hoppes number 9 is something I will never forget but it’s been a long time since I have ever used that even though I believe I have a small amount of it somewhere.   There are plenty of reasons to think about updating your gun cleaning supplies because things really have been changing.    I was at a trade show years ago and finally got some first hand experience cleaning a bolt action rifle and an AR15 rifle.  As soon as I saw the  kit put back together I realized that this is exactly what someone being deployed out in the field or wanted to pack up in a backgpack would want.   It’s a much better kit than what you would get out a Russian AK.

Gun lubes have changed and improved but I don’t know how anyone can come up with a better field use gun cleaning system than this.   Boresnakes are very useful but not all guns can be cleaned very well with just a boresnake and sometimes you need something like the Otis gun cleaning kits because they have tools for scrapping carbon off or your gun or just giving you more caliber options.   Some of the cleaning kits are specific to firearm calibers and then others are for handguns, rifles, shotguns or variations of that.   They also come with cleaning lubricants.    I primarily use mine  on my AR15 if I am doing more than 1 day  on the range
