1st Time Handgun owner fears

gun safesAfter Sept 11th and the Hurrican Katrina News cyles, many people have opened their eyes to the fact that their is evil in our generation and that any one of us could face it in our home or our way to work.   There have been a lot of people opening their eyese to gun owner ship.   I can’t tell you the times I’ve heard women say that they “will never allow a gun in their house” and how that mindset has been disapating ever since the Hurrican Katrina havoc.   I had a liberal female friend who was willing to atleast come to a range with me say that “just the existance of a firearm in a home is a deterant, you don’t even have to fire it to prevent bad people from coming onto your property.   Although bad people come in different flavors, most of them will skip your house if you spray paint a warning on your front door informing looters that you will shoot them if they come near you.

I understand peoples fears of having guns around with children, I do believe that if you have children in the house, all guns should be locked up.   I can remember all of my friends that got access to firearms when their dads weren’t around and although they never mishandled them, it’s not a good idea for kids to have access to them until they are proven to be competant and emotionally stable enough to have access.  When dealing with people that are concerened about this, I skip discussions about handguns, and just talk about various types of gun safes that are available and explain to people that push button keypads and finger print scanning technology is here and there is zero chance your kid is going to have access to the gun.  I also strongly suggest hiding and bolting the safe down in an area that is not highly visible.  For $80-$300 you can buy a handgun safe that can be accessed in seconds and there is zero chance your kids will ever have access to.

Fear of firearms

Kimber Guardian AngelI recently spoke to a friend who manages a gun shop.   We had a discussion about taking new shooters to the range and trying to break people in to not having a fear of having a firearm in their home.   I know of several family members who normally vote Democrat in National elections that all said that they thought about the fact that they did not have access to firearms if something like that ever ocurred in their hometown.    The idea of having extra food in the house before a snow storm isn’t paranoid, the idea of having smoke detectors in the home incase of fire is being paranoid, is having the ability to put out a fire in your house crazy when you can just let the fire company do it?   What about having some level of defense in  your home if some drunk shows up at your door at 2am or your husbands employee that was just fired wants to make an unexpected visit?

I never pressure people into owning firearms.   I always let that decision fall on the person buying a gun.   My job is to show them that having a firearm in their hands should be something that gives them confidence.   I’ve seen my share of CCW holders that I would not want to stand next to on a firing line due to poor firearm safety skills, so someone is going to have to put some time in to train with me before I tell them I think they are ready to carry one.   One thing I have heard several times recently is that somebody has a wife that says ” I will never have a gun in my home”.   I understand that, that is a mindset that probable can’t be negotiated with, but one thing I am not sympathetic to is any person with a family that does not have some defensive measures in place.   Guns are a lethal weapon that in untrained hands can be a hazard, and there are several other things that any Father or Mother should know are around to be used as weapons.    Kimber Guardian Angel, Tazers, Baseball bats, and last but not least, CO2 fire extinguishers can also be very effective.   If a women won’t consider having items like that around for self defense, I’m all for an annulment.

Empty ranges in the Summer

Shooting Ranges If there is a time to get out and shoot and you know that you’ll get a range to yourself, it’s probable going to be in the mid to later Summer months.   I know this can also be uncomfortable to shoot in if its really hot, but if you can shoot in the shade and bring plenty to drink.  You might be able to shoot all day and call cease fires at will without having to wait for the guy next to you to stop shooting.   The worst times to get out are usually in the pre-hunting weeks when ranges are crammed with people trying to verify zero before the upcoming hunting trips.

A few years ago I got to test out the new scope mounts I had on my DSARMS STG58.   I took it to one of Pennsylvanias shooting ranges where I was lucky to get the whole thing to myself.   At this time of the year so many people are on vacaction and not hanging out at the gun club.    It probable took me no more than 5rds to zero the gun at 200yds and after approximately 25rds I  had my rifle setup to shoot out to 500yds.   You can drive out to the burms to speed up target changes, but it was even nicer to not have to call for a cease fire and wait for everyone to get done shooting.   Even better was knowing that when I came back from 500yds, I was the only 0ne there and could just begin plinking at will.    The Sierra 168gr Matchking performed very well for a NATO relic.

Kimber Guardian Angel sticker shock?

Kimber Guardian AngelIf you are looking to carry mace or pepper spray, I would absolutely have to urge you to do some research on the Kimber Guardian Angels also known as the Life Act.    At first you might get sticker shock, and I think you may want to consider buying 2 of them and test firing 1 of them before you really get comfortable carrying one.   I’ve earned my merit badges in seeing evil in the world I know walking around with the smallest pepper spray bottle to fend off a potential rapist, robber, or worse isn’t going to give you much of an edge.   There are many reasons to consider carrying a less lethal defensive measure.   You can blast someone with something like this without much of a worry about legal ramifications.   I’ve seen pepper spray used against 0bnoxious drunks which in my opinion were justified.

Why is the Kimber Guardian Angel a good choose over bottled pepper sprays?   I’m not sure if there is anything else as innovative as the Kimber Guardian, but if there is feel free to fill me in on it.   Bottled defensive measures have 2 flaws for the most part.   Number one is that you are going to have to figure out which end is the one to point it when in a hostile situation and the other is the shelf life of the product.   The Kimber is easy to point and you will know in micro seconds which end to point at  your attacker.   There is a safety mechanism that prevents accidental discharge which is something that does occur with the flip tabs that bottle sprays have.   The Kimber Guardian Angel will fit comfortable in most 5.11 Tactical, Woolrich Elite Series or Eotac front pockets.  The Kimber also has a shelf life of over 2yrs and if you are buying bottle mace every year, the Kimber costs you only $20 a year for 2yrs to help  you not get that $40 sticker shock.

Customized rifles and shotguns

rifle stocksThere is another issue that I see come up when taking new students to the range.   I usually bring various military style rifles with me to get people to adjust to recoil and realize the common military style weapons that exist in the world.   Many of these individuals, after a day on the range tend to select the gun that fit them the best.   When I first got into shooting rifles, I started out with all of the military surplus firearms that came into the Country in the early and mid 1990s.   There may never be another time where Soviet style weapons are imported into this Country.   The military warehouses got cleaned out after the fall of the Soviet Empire and American gun owners were the beneficieries.

When I started shooting these rifles, I was lucky if I could hit a pie plate since my shooting expertises was at the novice level.    I’ve shot within 2 inch groups with all of these weapons in the last few years with handloaded ammo so I know that my shooting skills had achieved there peak with these types of firearms.   Another thing I had to do before being able to shoot these rifles comfortable is to upgrade all of the rifle stocks to longer lengths.  I put on various rifle stocks on my SKS rifles, MAK90s and Romanian and Bulgarian AK styles weapons.    I told some of my students that when choosing a Primary rifle or Carbine for Defensive training, don’t hesitate to customize the weapon to your personal comfort.  Put the rifle buttstock on your rifle that you feel comfortable with and make sure you measure your length of pull.   Many of those AK style weapons are too short for us taller types but it is possible to get longer rifle stocks that can get you closer to your comfort zone.

Smaller doesn’t mean easier

Kahr magazinesI’ve got my credentials from the NRA to teach students, but it wasn’t for any financial gain or to be a full time teacher.    The real reason I got into training was because of all of the bad instruction I’ve witnessed from untrained teachers.   I’ve seen guys show up with their girlfriends and basicall load up a handgun to full capacity and begin their first experiences on the firing line by telling them to “rack the slide”.    I believe I’ve seen that type of firearm instruction one too many times, and I believe i’ve seen it atleast 3 times.   The female has her finger on the trigger while she fearfully tries to pull back on the slide and sometimes instantly jams the gun.  The first time I saw this happen there were shooters  on a firing line on both sides and I just stood there shaking my head.  Not only are we going to see an accident about to happen, but this girls first experience wasn’t going to be a good one.   I know now to be more assertive and speak up when I see stuff like that, but luckily there were no major mishaps.

Every other time I saw the same type of behavior I spoke up and got involved.  I’m not going to bash women because I’ve gone shooting with plenty of females that were shooting up to 600yds with 308 rifles so don’t think I’m trying to say that women can’t handle recoil.   I’m not one to say that you have to start a new shooter out on a 22LR pistol, just don’t load it up to full capacity the first time someone is pulling the trigger.    I had a Kahr MK40 with 2 Kahr magazines with me and a Beretta 96.   I asked a friends girlfriend which gun looked like it had more recoil and she thought the Beretta 96 did.   I told  her that if she was afraid of recoil at first, that the bigger gun actually kicked less and the smaller firearm, more.   She started out shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 19 with 38 Specials and worked her way up to a 1911 that day, and I could tell by the smile on her face that she wasn’t afraid of shooting firearms.

Tactical pants and your wallet

Eotac pantsThe Eotac Style 202 pants are basically an improved pocket design over the Woolrich Elite 4429 pants.  The Eotac 203 are similiar to Woolrich Elite 4441 and the Eotac 201 are similiar to the Woolrich Elite 4447 styles.    Each may look the same at first look, but try stuffing the pockets with various items and  you’ll quickly notice the design differences.   The ID pocket on the Eotac pants have a pull tab that make it easy to open the pocket and I have absolutely zero problems using my gear with this design.   The side cargo pockets are bellowed and although not as wide as BDU pants, you will be able to use these for mag dumps much easier.

The title may sound like we’re going to talk about the expense of various tactical pants, but this post is actually going to be about retrieving your wallet from your tactical pants.   When I first got into wearing tactical pants, I started out wearing the 5.11 stuff most people are introduced to.   I tended to feel like my wallet didn’t fit right in the rear pockets becaused they floated around too much.   The  next line of tactical pants I wore were the Woolrich Elite 4429 style and although they are very well made and the quality is there, I really thought the velcro ID pocket was a pain to use for a wallet.   I carry a few credit cards, but I have a lot of business cards and other type of ID that I carry and my wallet is probable thicker than 3/4 of operators.   After I found out about Eotac pants, and the fact that the original designers of the Woolrich Elite series clothing are the present designers of the Eotac apparel, I gave them a try.

Gun cases for pistols

gun casesMost of us alreayd know that when we buy a new gun we usually get some sort of factory gun case.   These gun cases are nice for transporting the gun it is intended for and possible can hold a few magazines.   I’ve got a pile of them in my storage room, but I never use them for range trips.    I own a few range bags since I tend to actually use them for more than just packing up guns.   After having several experiences with forgeting to bring ammo, magazines, targets or staplers, I’ve learned to pack up my stuff and leave it in a bag that always comes to the range with me.

Pistol gun cases that come from the factory don’t have room for targets or ammo, and something like the Uncle Mike’s deluxe range bag can be had for under $50.   A few of my range bags can hold approximately 4 handguns and the middle compartments hold ammo, stamplers or targets.   I always put the guns away when I’m done with them, but many times I keep the ammo there.  I realize that if you have optics on any of your handguns you may not want to put so much heavy stuff in one bag, because even though there is padding between the guns, it still is considered a soft case transport.

How much time are you going to waste on cleaning?

Hoppes boresnakesI’ve had this argument with friends when they were arguing that direct impingement guns weren’t really hard to maintain and that spending another $500 on a piston driven AR15 wasn’t worth the money because you could basically buy another gun for that money.    I’d like to see people use the same argument if someone came out with a car that only needed an oil change every 15,000 miles instead of every 3000 miles.   How many times are you going to have to pull over and drop the car off and wait for a mechanic or waste an hour on a Saturday doing an oil change?  Keep that in mind the next time you go shooting and bring 3 or more rifles with you and then spend all Sunday night cleaning them.   If you could cut your cleaning time by 2/3s and reduce the need for brushes and cleaning patches for $20 would it be worth it?

Even though Hoppes boresnakes have been around for awhile, I still know an awful lot of  people that never used them.   I can guarantee you that these are not a gimmick and Hoppes boresnakes  do an excellent job of cleaning your barrels.   Another thing I often see is people jamming cleaning rods down rifles and unknowingly scratching up the inside of the barrel.   A boresnake takes of less room than traditional guide rods and they are easy to clean.    They are caliber specific so you have to consider picking them up for each caliber.    I really appreciated having mine after cleaning 3 rifles that were all 5.56 chambered and just went from one barrel to then next in seconds.   As long as you take good care of your guns, the brushes on the boresnake will clean your rifle as good as any rod driven brush.

Range Report on Sig 220

Galco HolstersMy Sig 220 blasted its way through the first 8rds without a hickup.   I did notice a mini cloud of lint around the gun, and maybe I should rethink some of the shirts I wear to try and prevent or reduce this, but I thought that lint can’t be any worse than dirt and these are combat pistols.    I continued to put another 300rds of 45acp 230gr FMJ ammo and had a stopage.   I had a friend tell me that the Sig Factory rep he dealt with says that the guns should run wet and that they are dependent on using more lubrication than something like a Glock.   Although I’ve never gotten the bug to own a Glock, I guess I’ll have to acknowledge that Glock does have an edge over Sigs in this area.    One thing I have considered doing is putting a  little grease on all of my pistols, that way it won’t drain off as easily as CLP or similiar types of lubrication.   That is something to think about for pistols.

Today was a rare day that I was able to get away from the family life and get out for a day at the range.   My Sig 220 was pretty dirty and it hasn’t been cleaned in months.   There was lint building up in the firing pin area between the hammer and the firing pin.    My initial thougts were to clean it first, but then I thought about the TO HELL AND BACK reliability claims and thought I’d just start blasting.  The gun was pretty dry, but this was a test of my standard CCW guns durability.   I was normally carrying my Sig 220 45acp in an IWB holster.  These Galco Holsters are easy to remove from my belt although I know that clip on holsters have a higher rate of coming off than loop through or other types of holsters.
